Archangel, Russia
Nov. 20, 1918

Dear Parents,

I am well and enjoying life at present in the city of Archangel.17 I am at the Y.M.C.A writing for this, the last time for a while (on) account of the river freezing up. But later on they will be able to use dog sleds to deliver the mail.18 By the look of things at present, we may be here all winter, but things may change overnight you know, but I should (not) worry we are all through fighting here. Don’t worry about me for I am safe and sound. I would like to send you a picture of myself, but a fellow cannot do everything at once. We are at Archangel for a rest and I may get a chance in a day or so. I seen a place tonight, but it was too late.

Archangel is some place, it has some fine buildings and fur stores, some of the finest furs you ever seen. I would like to send you a set of fur but it costs too much money for (illegible). If a fellow wanted to bring souvenirs from here and other places, he would have to hire a Ford truck. So do not expect any from me if I return, which I will be doing some day expect soon. We all have hopes to arrive (home) soon, but you never can tell, that is Army life. The only souvenir from Russia will be me, Ha Ha !

The weather is rather snappy out, but we should (not) worry, we are prepared for it. It is about 20 degrees below (zero, Fahrenheit). We have been guarding railroads and fighting Bolsheviks. It is a great sport, you have to keep your head low, which I did.

A fellow can’t write much (on) account of censorship, but a line or two I think is better than a whole lot. Well another thing that will please you a whole lot, I think, is that I found a place where I can go to Church and Communion that is Sunday at 10:30.

Well I think I will close for there is going to be some amusement in the Y.M.C.A. shortly. A fellow enjoys sport now more than ever before. I have been lucky, dear parents, thank God, but all for Old Glory.

Well all is well now, I must close with best regards and good wishes to all. I remain your ever-loving son.

PS: Send my best regards to Mrs. Jacob and the rest of the neighbors. It may be a great surprise to you all when I blow in. Don’t worry, for I am having a hell of a time. Rest in ease, for I am well-protected. Will write as soon as possible.

17 Company I was assigned to the railroad front, so even though Archangel was about 110 miles to the north of Emtsa, they could be quickly rotated back to Archangel by train for some "rest and relaxation", guard duty and training.
18 Archangel was upstream from the mouth of the Dvina River. Once the river froze, all mail and supply ships had to dock in the ice-free port of Murmansk and their contents were then transported 300 miles by train and then by dog sled for the final 200 miles to Archangel.
