Stories & Tales Page |
Like any "Glamis Dune Runner", my stories get better as they get older. |
Welcome I have created this
page so that I can share with you some of the experiences that I have while duning at
Glamis |
The trip of the year for me, seven days at Glamis, and the beginning of a new year. We arrived Monday, setup camp and began our riding. Jay, Dave, and myself duning it up, drinking, dragging, and having a good old time. As with most of our trips this year us three were the first ones out of our group to arrive at the dunes, so it was a small camp for a few days. But then it grew; boy did it grow! Twenty something I'd say but a good group full of laughs and stories. Competition hill at night, Oldsmobile hill by day and Sand Drags in between, our entire group kept busy duning it up. The highlight of the trip came about mid way through the trip at the sand drags on Gecko Road. It involved my sand rail (one of the only things I actually own) and something that I let few to none drive, especially at the drags. BUT, with my girl there and wanting to make a pass, I gave in. It was new years day, about 3:30 and we were all at the drags on Gecko Road. I had made several passes with my car already, and it was now time for Erin (my girlfriend) to give it a try. We buckled her in with Wendy beside her and they were off. First run down the strip was fair at best and I could tell she was being cautious. Second run about the same and my stress level began to lower. But it was that infamous third pass that changed everything for us. Wow, here she came third gear on the gas some 60+ MPH down the strip. With no sign of decelerating I quickly prepared myself (mentally) for an accident. The mental picture my mind produced was one I will not soon forget. Then all of the sudden there it was, out of know where a Jeep, right in front of her. The rear wheels locked up, the engine was off and the car began to slide sideways. Sliding and sliding, it became completely perpendicular to the drag strip, I honestly thought it was all over with. Finally a Boom, the rear tire was off the rim and the car came to a jolting stop (in the middle of the shut down area). Relieved that it was still on all four wheels (or rims), I headed down to assess the damage. I pulled up to see that the tire was off the rim and the girls were laughing and scared all at the same time. I was relieved, nobody was hurt and the sand rail was fine. I pulled the car off of the strip and removed the tire. We headed back to camp, aired it up, and reinstalled it on the car. I was back on the strip. The car ran fine after that, and we dragged until the sun went down. Possibly on my next trip to the dunes with Erin she will have the chance to redeem herself at the sand drags. Until then I'll be preparing my mind, car, and increasing the insurance coverage on it. Aside from this small mishap, the trip was excellent, weather and all. I look forward to my next trip to the dunes. Until next time, dune safely and remember pick up your trash. Lets keep the best duning spot in the world open for us to use. |
