Narratives of the Norsemen

Histories of the Tungland Family

The Tungland surname hales from near Stavanger, Norway from the collection of farms bearing that same name in Strand parish. The current history goes back continuously to 1602. Prior to that time the Black Death plague had emptied the farms in 1567 and the farms lay fallow until repopulated in 1602. The farms of Tungland have had various spellings over the centuries; Togeland, Twnglan, Tvngeland, Twngeland, and Thingelannd in the oldest records. The farms take their name from the tongue of land jutting out into Botsfjord that they are located on. The farms were known as Thungelandt in 1563, Tunnglannd in 1567, Thungeland in 1602, Tungland in 1610, Tungeland in 1661, and again Tungland in 1723.
