Our first photo is of Private, Hugh J. McManus of Company M:

Hugh J. McManus was born November 8, 1861 in Mullingar, West Meath County, Ireland to parents Andrew McManus and Mary Bannon.  Hugh enlisted with the 9th N.Y. on July 6, 1898, in New York City, to serve two years. He mustered in as private, Co. M, same date; mustered out with company, November 15, 1898, at New York City. Hugh lived in Minneapolis along with New York City before settling in Johnson City, Tennessee. In Johnson City, TN, Hugh married Minnie Wilcox White Lewis on August 11, 1932 and they lived in the same city on 114 West Chestnut Street. Hugh J. McManus passed away on March 3, 1942 at Soldiers Home Hospital and was buried at Mountain Home Cemetery (now named Representative Jimmy Quillen), Johnson City, TN. Plot K-01-14. Private, Thomas M. Smith of Company G:

Thomas M. Smith was born December 13, 1879 in Ireland, to parents William Smith and Ellen O'Shea. Thomas  enlisted with the 9th N.Y. on June 23, 1898, at New York City, to serve two years. Thomas mustered in as private, Co. G, same date; mustered out with company, November 15, 1898, at New York City. While serving with the 9th N.Y. at Camp Chickamauga, Thomas contracted malaria and dysentery that affected his health for the rest of his life. Following the war, Thomas was a School Teacher with New York City Public Schools. Thomas passed away on October 5, 1958 and is buried at Long Island National Cemetery, Long Island, NY. Plot S 1750. He was 78 years old at the time of his death.

Private, Joseph Thomas Malone of Company E:

Joseph Thomas Malone was born in Greenwich Village on March 2, 1875. Joseph enlisted at 22 with the 9th N.Y. on July 6, 1898, at New York City, to serve two years. Thomas mustered in as private, Co. E, same date; mustered out with company, November 15, 1898, at New York City. During his service, Joseph got malaria badly and lost lots of weight. He felt lucky to have lived through Camp Thomas, Chickamauga Park, Georgia. Following the war, Joseph settled down and married Margaret Andrews and they had three children, Edmond, Harold, and David. Joseph Thomas Malone was a mounted New York City Policeman from April 1905 to his retirement in November of 1930. Joseph passed away on December 9, 1953 in St. Cloud, Florida. He was buried at Mount St. Mary's Cemetery, Flushing, New York. He was 78 years old at the time of his death.

First Lieutenant, Emil John Winterroth of Company L

Emil John Winterroth born circa 1850. Served as a Lieutenant with the 9th New York National Guard unit from 1885. At age of 34 years, he enrolled in the 9th NY on May 2, 1898 at New York City, as second lieutenant, to serve two years; mustered in as first lieutenant, Company L, May 20, 1898. Discharged July 27, 1898; commissioned first lieutenant, May 20, 1898, with rank from same date, original. Around 1880, E. J. Winterroth founded the Winterroth & Co. Pianos, New York City. Winterroth & Co. Pianos had stores on 125th Street and 14th Street in NYC and other locations in Newburgh, NY and Jersey City, NJ. The last store closed around 1930. First Sergeant, Ralph C. Chadsey of Company M

Ralph C. Chadsey was born September 8, 1871 in Warren, Massachusetts to Nathan Bushnell Chadsey and Maria Theresa Woodworth. From the age of 13 he competed in foot races, bicycle races and on skates in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New York. He originally joined Company E of the 9th Regiment on September 23, 1889- two days later winning a 25 mile race. He made a name for himself as a great athlete. On December 22, 1891, he married Susan Hegelman, in New York City. He enlisted with the 9th Regiment on May 2, 1898 and mustered in as a sergeant on May 7, 1898, Company M at Camp Townsend in Peekskill, New York. After contracting malaria while serving at Camp Thomas in Chickamauga, Georgia he was discharged on August 23, 1898. He returned home to New York City where he worked as an usher at the Metropolitan Opera House. He continued to pursue his passion for racing, however the malaria left him with a weakened heart, and on September 16, 1901, at the age of 30, he succumbed to a fatal heart attack. leaving his pregnant wife Susan, with four children. Their fifth child was born on March 16, 1902, and she named him Ralph C. Chadsey, Jr. Susan raised her five children alone and died February 17, 1950, at the age of 78. Ralph C. Chadsey is buried in Lutheran Cemetery (now named "All Faiths") in Maspeth, New York - Map 3A, Lot 21, Row39, Grave 37 (no headstone).  (special thanks to Mr. Chadsy's Great-Granddaughter, Arlene Walsh, for sharing the wonderful photos and information)

                                            Capt. William F. Morris        Captain William F. Morris, Company K.

 Here is a post war photo of  Capt. William F. Morris of Company K. Morris enlisted in the 13th Brooklyn in June of 1876, as a Private, working his way up to Lieutenant in 1884 with the 14th Brooklyn. He later became a Company commander of Company K and then took over company K of the 9th New York during the SAW. He then took over the 9th NY Regiment in 1899 after the resignation of the Colonel and led the regiment until 1914. He died in 1921 and is buried in Brooklyn.
