"Old" C.H.L. Gallery


Welcome to the Gallery. There have never been any real plans for the Gallery. So I'll just put up different items from different teams about once a month (sometimes longer). If there is something special your looking for, email me. I can post them here.


This Month in the Gallery we feature some rare color photos from the Birmingham South Stars. The Birmingham South Stars only played in the old CHL for the 1982/83 season. Enjoy!!!

 

Dave Richter (L) and Steve Martinson (R).

Here's a great shot of Dave Richter (left) and the very tough Steve Martinson (right). Dave was a CHL 2nd Team All-Star defenseman for the 1982/83 season. Dave also went onto play in 365 NHL games with the Minnesota North Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks and the St. Louis Blues. Steve Martinson played in 49 NHL games and today is the Head Coach of the San Diego Gulls in the WCHL.

Wes Jarvis.

Wes Jarvis was awarded the Phil Espostio Trophy (League Scoring Champion) for the 1982/83 season. Wes scored 40 goals and a league high 68 assists for a league high of 108 points. This same season, Wes was also named CHL 1st Team All-Star Centerman. Today Wes serves as an Assistant Coach of the Barrie Colts of the OHL. 

Don Beaupre (in net).

Here's a rare photo of Goaltender Don Beaupre making a great kick save. Don only played 15 games in the old CHL and 10 of them were with the Birmingham South Stars. In 10 games, Don had a record of 8 wins, 2 losses, a GAA of 3.11 and a save % of .906. Don went onto play in 667 NHL games with the Minnesota North Stars, Washington Capitals, Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Don lives in Minnesota where he and a partner run a construction equipment rental business. Other players in this photo are Keith Hanson (#24), Dave Logan (#4), and Colorado Flame Greg Meredith.

Markus Mattsson (in net).

Here's Markus Mattsson making a glove save on Colorado Flame Danny Bolduc. Markus played in the WHA with the Winnipeg Jets and the Quebec Nordiques. He also played in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets, Los Angels Kings and Minnesota North Stars. Today, Markus is a member of the board of directors and is also serving as a managing advisor for Universal Players Ltd. Universal Players Ltd. is a company specialized in junior and youth hockey world wide. Markus is also a member in the "Hockey Hall of Fame" in Finland. Markus is the owner of one of the biggest companies in Finland, Instrumentointi Ltd. and in 1999 he was chosen as "the most successful businessman" in Finland.

Steve Carlson.

Steve Carlson may be most famous for his appearance in the Movie Slapshot as one of the Hanson brothers. Many people don't know that he played professional hockey for 14 seasons in the NHL, WHA, AHL, CHL, NAHL, and USHL. After his retirement as a player, Steve coached professionally for five seasons in both the ECHL and CHL
