POMPEII

Apparent to the true historian, the people of Pompeii endured a death equally breath taking as their life, belief system and overall culture. The people of Ancient Pompeii were destroyed via suffication and volcanic lava impact from the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius August 24, 79 A.D. Back then, Pompeii was known as, " Colonia Veneria Cornelia Pompeii " , named after the conquerer of the Pompeii area and to Venus, the Italian Goddess of love.

Unfortunately , one thousand seven hundred years passed from the point when the people of ancient Pompeii had died until it was unknowingly disturbed by architect Domenico Fontana. Suprisingly, the first excavations were not started until 1748, directed by Charles Bourbon. To this day, Pompeii is still under excavation with four fifths of it uncovered and even less of it open to the public eye!

Many people excuse Pompeii as an ancient city that was under - developed compared to other cities that mankind has built throughout history. These under educated people do this out of ignorance. Here is the root of this misconception - even though 40% of the people of Pompeii were slaves, this city was built on intelligence. In order to see clearly, one must know that most of the slaves at that time were as educated if not more educated than their masters. You see, many slaves were taken from the cultural class or from conquered regions.

Ancient Pompeii was amazing. Pompeii received water from the River Sarno, wells, etc. An aqueduct carried water to varied parts of ancient Pompeii including public baths and fountains. An amazing feat for that time when you consider that Pompeii was comprised of 8,000 - 10,000 inhabitants! Additionally, two thirds of the urban area included houses, inns, baths, brothels, shops and more. It is interesting to note that the roads had pavements in ancient Pompeii. Ancient Pompeii was no sight for sore eyes, so to speak!

In March of 2001, I had the opportunity to go to Italy and visit the ancient site of Pompeii, now archeologically public in Italy, located south of Rome. Much like the United States city of Salem, MA , Pompeii is now comprised of the new Pompeii and the old Pompeii ( which is ancient ). The ancient, now excavated city of Pompeii is simply huge. To give you an idea, Anson and I covered only half of the city walking double time within a full day. There are not only bakeries, brothels, houses, baths, theatres, shops, and many other ancient things to see - but there are also temples to various gods. Suprisingly, Popidius Celsinus restored a Temple of Isis in Pompeii ( in the year 62 A.D. ) that originated from the pre-Roman age. There are many temples to almost any Italian / Etruscan god that you can imagine. The ones that I liked the most were :

The House of Faun

Probubly built by Publius Silla, nephew of a dictator. This house once possessed a huge mosiac of the Battle of Alexander the Great amoung other art which is now at the National Museum of Naples, Italy. In the front of the entrance is the greeting

" have "

.
As you can see, the entrance is made up of double doors. At the top of the walls are lares ( house spirits )! This is just the beginning of a beautiful sanctuary - like house dedicated to an amazing Italian / Etruscan god. When one enters, they are confronted with a still - standing bronze Faun ontop of an awesome Opus Sectile floor, composed of various bits of colored marble.
This house explodes with all the ancient luxuries including a kitchen, bathroom and stable. One moves to the back to see the typical columns and trees that accent the excavated house.

The Temple of Fortuna Augusta

Marcus Tullius was the suck up to the popular Goddess Fortuna that built this temple dedicated to the Imperial Cult of Fortuna in 3 A.D. Statues were contained in the Temple and I assume that they were eventually stolen or came under the possession of a private collector.

VARIOUS PICTURES

The streets of ancient Pompeii today!

An open area ......

Looking into some special bldg ( forgot which one ) ... Wow ... I ( Nella ) am resting my foot on an ancient bench under a part of an ancient tower/arch/portal.

Normally, I would know what this ancient site was all about. However, in the case of info. on the area of Pompeii in this picture I am lost. Thanks to a gypsy in Milan who stole my luggage containing my dirty clothes, some pamphlets and my notes. Darn it!

ARTWORK

Historically, there were four styles of artwork in the form of wall decoration within the city of ancient Pompeii. These were the Incrustation, Architectural, an abolishing of prospective illusions - type - of - style, and the varied style. The first style imitated marble facing and lasted until 80 B.C., the Architectural Style included landscapes ( framed ) with illusion and depth elements. The third style was decoration which was used to frame small pictures of artwork. The varied or fourth style was developed around / in the first century A.D.

Overall, ancient Pompeii is an archeological wonder that should be appreciated on all levels - religiously, architecturally, culturally, historically, etc., etc.,
