In my youth I was a pretty darn good speller, and believe that I still am - so good that in 1971 I was the spelling bee champ of my school (JHS 125) and my school district. That second victory got me into the citywide spelling bee, which - needless to say - I did not win. I was eliminated on the word "asylum." (How appropriate.) I don't recall if I added an extra s (Very appropriate.) or another l. Hmmm ... maybe it was two as. Whatever.
Even though my glory years of competitive spelling are long past, some things stay with a person. As I explore, I can't help but notice signs which contain spelling errors. I capture them for posterity with my handy digital camera and present them here for our collective education and entertainment.
I'm not a nitpicker, however. I do not present signs of the redundant "ATM Machine," or those all-too-common ones which read "Stationary" instead of "Stationery" (Come to think of it, a stationery should also be stationary.) or "Newstand" rather than "Newsstand." And those which take liberties with the English language for the sake of brevity or supposed cleverness ("Toys 'R' Us" "La-Z-Boy" "Rite Aid" "While U Wait" "Drive Thru" "Open All Nite") don't qualify for inclusion. Still, I've found that there is a fertile source of good misspelled material if you keep your eyez, er, eyes open.
