Misspelled Signs - Page 19

Miss Nails, 90-22 Jamaica Avenue, Woodhaven, NY

I've seen "fiberglas" spelled "fiberglass," but this is much better - "fiver glass." Could that be why they were reduced from $30 to $25? (Save a fiver by getting "fiver glass" tips.) One more thing: I'm hesitant to call "powda" a spelling error. It might be some kind of ethnic way of saying "powder," sort of like "mutha" or "sista."

J & A Discount Store, 88-18 Jamaica Avenue, Woodhaven, NY

Here's yet another variation on "cigarette" - "cigarett." Actually, we've seen this before but as a plural - "cigaretts" instead of "cigarettes."

86 St. D & P Deli & Grocery, 86-04 Jamaica Avenue, Woodhaven, NY

Bakon: Is that some kind of bacon substitute?

Linda's Store, 84-19 Jamaica Avenue, Woodhaven, NY

Sorry, but it looks like you'll need a magnifying glass for this one. For starters, there are breakfast specials 1 and 2 - "Western Omelete" and "Vegetable Omelete." (s/b "omelet" or "omelette") Then in column two, which lists the lunch specials, the first one reads "Hamberger." However, the sign writer was more careful with his next two entries, "Cheese burger" and "Bacon and cheese burger." Notice below the bergers, er, burgers that "All Deluxe burger platters are served w/letuce, tomatoes, pickle, French Fries." Lastly - not a spelling error - is the item "Grill cheese." (The rest of the item - if anything - is obliterated by another sign with even more breakfast specials. With so many breakfast specials, I wonder how special they really are.) I've never known a sandwich with that name, but many times I've enjoyed one called "grilled cheese." Live and learn, I guess.

Little John's Place Hairstyling, 80-19 Jamaica Avenue, Woodhaven, NY

O.K. What the heck are "flatops?" Are they flat ops, or are they fla tops? But I like the last entry, "NORMAL HAIRCUTS TOO!" I guess they don't want to scare away potential customers who are afraid of fades, "flatops," and spikes. Their money is as good as those who want "abnormal" haircuts.

940 Wyckoff Avenue, Ridgewood, NY

Now hear this: "YOUR AD. HEAR" Where? Right hear!

Dynasty Auto Body Inc., 975 Wyckoff Avenue, Ridgewood, NY

Just because they employ several workmen doesn't mean that they collectively have professional workmenship. The word should be "workmanship." And Number Two: I've never known a vehicle to require its frame to be "stratened." They're usually plenty "strate" anyway.

1 Stop Grocery Store, 1439 Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

Love them two-fers! First up are "dounuts," which I assume are a little more than donuts but not as much as doughnuts. Secondly, there's an unusual misspelling of "cigarettes": "ciagarettes" What more could you ask for?

Five Brothers Corp. General Mechanics, 227 Starr Street, Brooklyn, NY

Call me eagle-eyed. This one is an awning which had been covered over with white paint, but the lettering was still faintly visible to the naked eye. The camera, however, didn't capture it so well, so I tinkered with the picture with Microsoft Photo Editor to get the image shown here. Anyway, just a bit to the right of center this sign for a former automotive repair shop reads "EXHAUSTION." I guess the mechanics got pooped out from all their work, so they eventually packed it in.

The Ark, 56-17 Metropolitan Avenue, Ridgewood, NY

Praise the Lord and pass the tamborines, er, tambourines. Halleluiah!
