Misspelled Signs - Page 20

James Simpson & Son, Inc. Plumbing & Heating, 58-07 Metropolitan Avenue, Ridgewood, NY

Big or small, they do it all - not just removing, but "removoving" violations.

Carniceria La Estrella, 132 Havemeyer Street, Brooklyn, NY

It's very subtle, but the awning reads "132 Havermayer St.," not "132 Havemeyer St." (It has an extra r, and an a in place of the second e.)

China Clothing Store, 156 Havemeyer Street, Brooklyn, NY

Almost there - "Havemayer," instead of "Havemeyer." (No extra r this time, but with the second e still replaced by an a.)

Uni-Med Family Health Care, 302 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY

First of all, I like how the sign-maker parenthetically explains some of the more technical terms: PEDIATRICS (BABIES) ... OPTHALMOLOGIST (EYES) ... E.N.T. (EAR. NOSE. THROAT.) ... DERMATOLOGIST (SKIN) ... PODIATRY (FOOT) (What about "neurology" and "urologist?")

But, getting back to the task at hand, there are two spelling mistakes - both toughies - "gynecology" is misspelled "gynocology," and "ophthalmologist" is missing its first h.

Variety Health Food & Candy, 168 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY

Admittedly, the word sounds like "weat," but it's spelled "wheat."

Mojali Deli Grocery, 500 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY

We've got a two-fer, both common ones - "cigarets" instead of "cigarettes," and "cofee" for "coffee." Oh, if only they had misspelled "sandwiches," they would have gotten the trifecta.

"J.V.R." Jewelry Corp., 636 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY

Whoops! Dropped the terminal e in "perfume."

Carol Bridal Shop, 773 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY

s/b "sup ... plies," not "supl ... lies"

Universal Auto Repair, 46-17 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City, NY

Can you dig it? The word is supposed to be spelled "diagnostic." Don't forget that all-important a. I wonder if there are any more spelling errors lurking under that American flag.

Superior Market, 40-?? Queens Boulevard, Sunnyside, NY

First of all, they have a sale on "Ducan Hines Cake Mix." (Is it pronounced "duckan" or "dookan?") Right below that, in the same shot, is a sign for "Light Fluffy - Wide or Exta Wide." (What is this stuff called Light Fluffy? Beats me. It's apparently sold by the ounce, so it might be some kind of detergent. Possibly, it's flour. If so, then "Wide" should probably be "White" or "Wite.") Next up, at 99¢ a pound, are both green and red seedles grapes. But best of all are the ones in the bottom right picture, two anagramatic misspellings of "chicken" - "chciekn" and "chicekn." It's almost as if they had a chicken arrange Scrabble tiles of its name to form two new words. (Note that "chicken" was spelled correctly in the signs for two other items, whole chicken and chicken thighs. I guess that, as the theory goes, an infinite amount of monkeys - or chickens - at an infinite number of typewriters would eventually spell the word "chicken" correctly.)
