Shopping is great
on Maui! Here's just a few places I'd suggest:
K-Mart (Kahului) No, really! This store has about the widest selection at the best prices
of just about anything you could imagine in the way of souvenirs. A huge variety of books and the like,
tee shirts, macadamia nut goodies, Maui videos, kukui nut leis, you name it! Located in the front of the store
to the right of the checkout, the selection will amaze you.
Whaler's Village
In the heart of the Ka`anapali resort area, this collection of stores covers a wide variety of
items for sale. From jewelry, to art and tee shirts, it's all here. Be sure not to miss the
Whaler's Village Museum, with it's collection of whaling era artifacts.
Tropical Disc (Kihei) Located at 2395 S. Kihei Rd. in
the Dolphin Plaza, this store has a huge selection of both traditional and contemporary Hawaiian
music tapes and CD's. They have listening stations set up so that you can preview many of the
available selections. They also have available a nice selection of quality handmade ukeleles.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. See their website from our Maui Links.
Original Red Dirt Shirt Stores Azeka Place, Kihei and 576
Front St. in Lahaina. These are very unique tee shirts made with real Kauai dirt to give them
their unique color. A variety of types and patterns are available. You shouldn't go home without
one. Look for discount coupons in the tourist magazines. See their site from our Maui Links.
Maui Swap Meet (Kahului) This weekly event takes place in Kahului
on Pu`unene Ave. across from the McDonald's restaurant on Saturday mornings from 7 a.m. to noon.
At this flea market/bazaar, you can find just about anything imaginable here at excellent prices. Clothing,
flowers, fruit, jewelry, local handcrafted items, tee shirts, you name it! Here you can find aloha
wear, both mens and womens, at prices much cheaper than the stores. Admission is $0.50. You shouldn't miss it!
Call (808) 877-3100 for more information.
505 Front St. Shops (Lahaina) Be prepared to spend most of
at least one day checking out the shopping along Front St. in Lahaina. About anything you could
imagine with lots you couldn't! There's also a Hard Rock Cafe on Front St. for the urban inclined
(just look for the lines around mealtime).
You might want to avoid the many people hawking discount activities on
Front Street. Most of these are just come-ons for timeshare companies that will take up a lot of your valuable time
for a possible savings of a few to several dollars. It's usually more reliable to deal the company direct that you
may be planning on using for an activity. If you want to get rid of these people, tell them that this is
your last day on Maui. Timeshares on Maui are generally very expensive and it's usually a lot cheaper
to buy one from a mainland resort that offers exchanges with resorts on Maui, unless you plan on coming back every year.
