Tom Butter creates sculptures consisting of simple abstract forms with a rippled transparent surface and
a scale attuned to the human body. These seemingly choreographed works demonstrate a peaceable
symbiosis between the personal and the formal. Butter's monotypes appear as a freezeframe in the
animated lives of his sculptures. With an eye towards organic abstraction, Butter puts down lines and
shapes which morph into arrangements that suggest the dynamism of human relations, the ebb and
flow of intimacy, the comfort of togetherness and the power of personal autonomy.

Butter has exhibited regularly in New York City since 1981 and has been included in many national and
international group exhibitions. He received three National Endowment for the Arts grants, and several
awards for his prints. Butter's work is included in many public collections including those of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, The Walker Art Center, and The Albright Knox Gallery. In the fall of 2001, Butter was
artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College, which included an exhibition of his sculpture and monotypes.
Butter has taught in many studio art programs, including graduate and undergraduate programs at Yale
University, the Rhode Island School of Design, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Maryland
Institute College of Art, Harvard University, returning as a Visiting Lecturer in January 2004, and Parsons
School of Design in New York City, where he is Coordinator of the MFA Program in Fine Arts.
