Over the past two decades Stephen Ellis has created a rich œuvre of emotionally charged abstraction,
synthesizing the legacy of Minimalism into paintings of complex structure. The geometric structures of
these works contain and reproduce in considered measure the familiar marks and gestures of Abstract
Expressionism. Referencing seemingly incompatible aesthetic approaches, the resulting coexistence of
control and improvisation in Ellis’ paintings provide stimulating visual tension and conceptual food
for thought.

Ellis studied at Cornell University and The New York Studio School. One-person exhibitions have included
those at Koury Wingate, Elizabeth Koury, André Emmerich, and Von Lintel & Nusser galleries in New York;
Ascan Crone and Thomas von Lintel galleries in Germany; Marella Arte Contemoranea in Milan; and Galerie
Nathalie Obadia in Paris. His work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and The National
Fund for Contemporary Art, Paris. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and
New York Foundation for the Arts. Ellis has written extensively on contemporary art for publications in Europe
and America including Parkett (Switzerland), Tema Celeste (Italy) and Art in America, for which he has also
been an associate and contributing editor.
