Meyer has
created sophisticated and engaging abstract paintings for over twenty
five years. From the outset,
she has incorporated a vocabulary derived from Abstract Expressionism
into a personal language of shifting
colors, forms and gestures. The desire for a state of grace within
a modern existence fraught with tension
and uncertainty reveals itself in Meyers work...it is the buoyant
love of life in all its turns that manifests in
the visceral twists and curves and the unrestrained palette that makes
her work so appealing and such a
pleasure to see. The resulting works demonstrate a generosity of spirit
and an emotional depth, characteristics
that could apply to Meyer herself.
In the past year, she has produced a large group of monotypes and
etchings for Riverhouse Editions; three
artist books, and a wonderful group of paintings for an exhibition
this past spring at Elizabeth
Harris Gallery
in New York. She was a visiting artist at the Memphis College of Art
and a resident faculty member at
Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and participated in two
group exhibitions, including the American
Academy of Arts and Letters Invitational. She is currently working
on two commissioned murals for a new public
building in Tokyo to open in January 2003. Pointie Dog Press looks
forward to the publication of monotypes by
Melissa Meyer in early 2003. |
