Wartime letters from Dallas County
Prices in Dallas, July of 1862
During the spring of 1861, the Lancaster Guards, a group of men from in and around Lancaster, TX who had been serving as a loosely organized militia, began recruitment of additional members, and formal training as a prospective Cavalry Co. From July 1-4, 1861 they participated in training exercises on the State Fair Grounds along with several other companies being raised in north Texas. Robert S. Guy had been elected Captain of the Lancater Co. prior to this time. In late August, 1861 the the Guards, and nine other companies assembled at Camp Bartow, seven miles south of Dallas ("between what is now Hutchins and the River, north of the Dowdy Ferry road"). On September 9, 1861 they were mustered in as Company F, 6th Texas Cavalry, CSA. The 6th was under the command of Barton Warren Stone jr. He resigned the following spring, and helped organize the 2nd Texas Partisan Rangers. On May 14, 1862, Lawrence Sullivan (Sul) Ross was elected Colonel.
Austin Brightman's pages, Rockwall,
TX in the Civil War [8-12-99, site presently
unavailable] are an excellent resource of information about
the 6th Texas Rgmt., including an order of engagements, and rosters for
other companies.
Additional details pertinent to the men of Company F are included in the Muster Roll. These details are being extracted from several sources, including the Official Record, and are uploaded as time permits. Additions and corrections are welcome, please contact Judy Baugh.

Company B, the Rockwall Cavalry, was commanded by John Summerfield Griffith, who would serve as Lt. Col. of the 6th, and engineer the brilliant raid on Holly Springs, MS, in December of 1862.
Company G was recruited from McLennan county, and commanded by Pete Ross, whose brother, Lawrence Sullivan "Sul" Ross, was also in that Company. The latter was elected Major of the 6th in September of 1861, and one year later was elected to lead the regiment during its reorganization subsequent to passage of the Conscription Act. Ross too would serve Texas as governor, from 1886-1890.
Company K's first Captain was legislator James Webb Throckmorton, of Collin county, who would later serve as governor of Texas, and be illegally removed from that post during Reconstruction.
