Some of my favorite memories from childhood center around DeSoto Parish, staying in the century-old DuBois house on Gibbs St. in Mansfield, where my great-grandmother Jennie [DuBois] Prather was born and raised, visiting our beloved cousin Lucille Moross (photo above), who lived around the corner & down the street on Crosby, and excursions to the old battlefield - which my father and his cousins had liberally mined for leftover ordnance in years gone by.  Would that I had spent more time back then paying attention to how I was related to the many "cousins" in DeSoto parish, but at the time it was impossible to resist exploring the nooks & crannies of those wonderful old homes, or climbing the ancient trees that shaded them, and only later did I become interested such matters.  Cousin Lucille's letters to my grandmother and great-aunt provided some intriguing clues, as did various legal records, Bible records, yearbooks, scrapbooks, etc.  It has been a distinct pleasure along the way to exchange information with other descendants of these families, and I'm much obliged to them for their interest and the wealth of information thay have shard.

These families all have one fact in common - they came to DeSoto Parish in the mid 19th century via a generation or two spent in Alabama.  Some were originally from Virginia.  Others - DuBois & Pegues - were Huguenots who had emigrated to South Carolina in the 17th & 18th centuries.  The Caters, Guys, Greenings & Pegues found here all have in common marriages with or descent from a child of John & Mary (Whitehead) Greening of Sumter Dist., SC & Dallas cty., AL.  The Williams are descendants of Josiah & Judith (Elmore) Williams of Virginia, South Carolina & Alabama, primarily the offspring of their son Thomas Jefferson Williams Sr., as well a handful of his nephews.  The Williams are connected with the other families through at least two marriages;  that of my great-great-grandparents Dr. Samuel P. DuBois (a nephew of Thomas J. Williams) &  Elizabeth Greening;  and the marriage of Thomas J. Williams Sr.'s son, (John) Elmore Williams, to Elizabeth Ann Guy.
