One time Postmaster at Burnsville & Bogue Chitto, Dallas Co., Ala. and a Justice of the Peace.

Member of Alabama Legislature,  1836 - 1838,Representing Dallas Co.
J. J. Greening was appointed a Delegate to attend the railroad commission held in Tuscaloosa  concerning the establishment of the Cahawba & Marion  RR in  August, 1835. 

His brother Rufus W. Greening was appointed  1 of 12 persons to take subscriptions. On January 18, 1834, Jabez W. Heustis was named as one of the Directors., being replaced in 1836 (Ref: The Story of Selma, Walter M. Jackson)

Served in Alabama State Militia,  & Raised a Co. for Mexican War, thou he, himself,  did not serve

Moved to Louisiana 1847,  Planter, and a large landowner in Sabine, DeSoto, & Red River Parishes, La 

Appointed to Board of Managers,  Mansfield Female college, by the Louisiana Methodist Conference, 1867-68

Died July 22, 1873, Desoto Parish, LA.  Buried Old Mansfield Cem.
His marker reads:  Major J. J. Greening,   Born in Sumpter  Dist., S.C., Aug. 31, 1804, Died near Mansfield, La. July 22, 1873 "Here lies one of God's Noblest Works, An Honest man"

Married SARAH ANN WARREN October 1, 1832 in Conecuh Co. AL, daughter of HINCHEY W. WARREN of Sparta, Conecuh co.., AL.  She was born January 1, 1817 in Georgia, and died February 16, 1892 in Mansfield, Desoto Parish, LA Buried: Prob. in Old Mansfield Cemetery, Unmarked grave.

members of Methodist Episcopal Church South, at Pleasant Hill, later in Mansfield, La.  (Among old members still living, 1890, was Mrs. Greening)

This couple had no children.

Aunt Lou was very fond of her nephew, Reuben E. Greening, and he lived with her while attending Centennary College. 

When Aunt Lou became ill with breast cancer, she came to Nacogdoches to live with her brother., T. J. Greening.  My grandmother took care of her until she died, at their home.   T. J. took her body back to Mansfield for burial.

Marker Reads: "Thy prayer is heard, thy suffering ceased, thy noble deeds still live, and noblest now thy long days work now lingers with us still.  Here silently rest until the shadows vanish into the light of life.  Thou lives in the hearts of all who knew thee.  This earth has born no nobler spirit  or more precious gem than thou sister."

Permit me to withdraw the name of Rodgers and mention in his place John S Greening .
I rec'd a letter this morning from Rodger's Guardian of which I learned that his age is under fourteen.
The young man I now mention is in his seventeenth year, has been educated by his brother, Gen'l. Greening of my District, on whom he has been dependent upon since infancy. His father was a soldier of the Revolution * as I am informed. He is a young man of considerable promise and dependant upon his own creation for his advancements. I have no doubt that this consideration should give weight to applications of this kind.
If George Bowman of Tennessee and Mr. Greening of Alabama could obtain warrants, I should be much (Illeg.).   I have the Honor to be respectfully, your most ob't servant.

It should be John J Greening, instead of John S.
