CORRESPONDENCE FROM JOHN J. . GREENING & HIS GUARDIAN
RE. HIS APPOINTMENT TO WEST POINT
JOHN J. GREENING West Point File

Cover Sheet Class of 1829 John S. Greening Date of Admission: 1 September, 1825 Age at Date of Admission: 21 yrs, O months Appointed from: Alabama Cadet's Legal Address: Alabama Remarks: Resigned: 31 March, 1826

HON. SECRETARY JOHN C. CALHOUN
Dear Sir:

Permit me to withdraw the name of Rodgers and mention in his place John S Greening .
I rec'd a letter this morning from Rodger's Guardian of which I learned that his age is under fourteen.
The young man I now mention is in his seventeenth year, has been educated by his brother, Gen'l. Greening of my District, on whom he has been dependent upon since infancy. His father was a soldier of the Revolution * as I am informed. He is a young man of considerable promise and dependant upon his own creation for his advancements. I have no doubt that this consideration should give weight to applications of this kind.
If George Bowman of Tennessee and Mr. Greening of Alabama could obtain warrants, I should be much (Illeg.).   I have the Honor to be respectfully, your most ob't servant.
Signed: G W. OWEN

*MY NOTE;  Actually, John Greening's service was 1794.

March 4, 1824

To the Secretary of War
SEAL

Learning that Mr. Rodgers is not of the age required for Cadets, I wish his name withdrawn and John S. Greening substituted in his place.
Mr. Greening is seventeen years of age and is represented by those who
know him to be a young man of great promise.
This comm. I present from the conversation I had with you, be no objection to his appointment..

With great respect,
 Your Obdt.Servt,
Signed: William R. King

We have the Honor to be respectfully,
 Your Obt. Servants
Signed:
John McKee
G. W. OWEN

I believe no Cadet has ever been appointed from the Middle District which I represent; therefore, hope Brumby will be appointed.
