John Greening was born 1771 Statesburg, SC  the son of Mason and Margaret (Haynsworth) Greening of Sumter District, SC.
His wife, Mary "Polly" Whitehead, born  1775, MECKLENBURG CO., VIRGINIA, was the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Swepson) Whitehead of  Lunenburg & Mecklenburg Counties, Va. 

This couple married in South Carolina CA 1796. At this time, marriage licenses were not required to be filed with the court in South Carolina,  so there has been no record found of their  actual marriage date

JOHN GREENING WAS A JUSTICE OF THE QUORUM, Sumter District, S. C. and a large land owner & planter..
He  died in 1817, Sumter Dist., SC.  In  Dec, 1818, (Deed Rec'd Jany, 1819) ,  the Greening family sold their plantation in Sumter, SC & Mary (Whitehead) Greening and her children relocated to  Dallas, Baldwin & Conecuh Counties   Alabama, where she married her widowed bro-in-law JOHN GAYLE Prior to 1823.  John Gayle died, fall of 1828 , Wilcox Co., Ala.
In 1847 Mary Whitehead Greening, Gayle removed to Desoto Parish, La. with some of her children, where she died after 1860.

Died 1854, Milton, FLA. with his wife and three youngest children in yellow fever epidemic.

To all to whom these Presents shall come, GREETING:

KNOW YE, That in pursuance of an Act of the legislature, entitled, An act for the establishing the mode of granting the "lands now vacant in this state, and for allowing a commutation to be reserved for some lands that have been granted," passed the 19th day of February, 1791, We have granted,  and by these presents do grant unto JOHN GREENING, his heirs and assigns, a plantation or tract of land, containing Four hundred and one Acres, Surveyed for him the 30th of June, 1802., Situate in the District of Sumter on branches Waters of Jack's Creek bounded by a line running NW by Unknown land, SW & NW by Archibald Henson's, SW by Adam Gibbart's, & SW by General Sumter's, SE by W. t. a. Dodds', NE by Newton's, NW & NE by William Smith's, and Charles Conyers, having such shape, form, and marks, as are represented by a plat hereunto annexed, together with all woods, trees, waters, watercourses, profits, commodities, appurtenances, and hereditaments whatever thereunto belonging, TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said tract of Four hundred and One Acres of Land, and all
and singular other the premises hereby granted unto the said JOHN GREENING, his heirs and assigns, forever, in free and common soccage.

KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I JOHN GREENING of Claremont County in the State aforesaid, in consideration of the sum of nine Negro Slaves in hand paid and delivered unto me and also the sum of twenty-five pounds Sterling in hand also paid me by WILLIAM MAYRANT, JOHN MAYRANT and ISABELLA his wife,  have granted, bargained, sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, alien and release unto WILLIAM MAYRANT upon such certain uses and trusts as are hereinafter mentioned, that is to say, TO AND FOR THE USE OF THE SAID JOHN MAYRANT AND ISABELLA, his wife, during their natural lives, then to the children of the said JOHN & ISABELLA, his wife, to them and their heirs forever, ALL these five tracts of land lying and being in the County & State aforesaid, containing in the whole Eight Hundred and Fifty Acres, to wit: two tracts of Land originally granted to MASON GREENING, containing two hundred Acres each, also two tracts of Land originally granted to MOSES KNIGHTON, one of which contains one hundred Acres and the other tract contains two hundred Acres; also one other tract containing one hundred and fifty acres, originally granted unto MATTHEW PATTERSON, all which said Tracts of Land are adjoining and contiguous to each other. Together with all and singular the rights, members, heriditaments and appurtenances, to the said premises belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining,, TO HAVE AND TO HOLD all and singular the premises before mentioned unto the said WILLIAM MAYRANT for the TRUSTS AND USES HERETOFORE MENTIONED and I do hereby bind myself, my heirs. Know all men by these presents, that I JOHN GREENING of Claremont County, in the State aforesaid, Planter, in   consideration of the sum of thirty-three dollars to me paid by SHADRACK RODGERS, of the County & State aforesaid, have granted, bargained, sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and release, unto the said SHADRACK RODGERS, all that tractor parcel Of land of thirty-three acres, more or less, surveyed for me the 24th July ,1800, lying on Bay Branch, a Prong of Black River, and hath such forms, marks, buttings, and boundings- as may more fully appear, by the original plat, together with all and singular the rights, members, hereditaments and appurtenances belonging to the said premises or in any wise incident or appertaining,. To have and to hold all and singular the premises before mentioned, more or less, unto the said SHADRACK RODGERS, his heirs and assigns forever, and I do hereby bind myself my heirs and Executors and Administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said premises (more or less) unto the said SHADRACK RODGERS, his heirs and assigns,' against myself and my heirs and against every person whomsoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same.  Witness my hand and Seal this second day of September, in the Year of Our Lord, one thousand Eight Hundred and Three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the twenty-eighth.

Planter, in consideration of the Sum of Forty-Four Dollars to me paid by JOHN GREENING, in the County and State aforesaid, have granted, bargained, sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, and release .unto the said JOHN GREENING all that plantation or Tract of Land containing Forty-four Acres, it being part of a tract of Land Originally granted to ISAAC JACKSON and from the said ISAAC JACKSON conveyed to THOMAS SUMTER, and hath such shape,' marks, butting, and boundings as will more fully appear by a plat .thereof, hereunto annexed -Together with all and singular the rights, members, hereditaments arid appurtenances belonging to the said premises or in any wise incident or appertaining- To have and to hold ail and singular the premises before mentioned unto the said JOHN GREENING, his Heirs and Assigns forever, and I do hereby bind myself my Heirs, Executors and Administrators to warrant and. forever defend all and singular the said premises unto the said JOHN GREENING, His Heirs, and Assigns against myself, my Heirs and against every person whomsoever 'lawfully claiming Or to claim the same or any part thereof.  Witness my hand and Seal the Sixteenth day of

West and South on the said JOHN GREENING'S land, and hath such forms and marks as the above plat represents-Certified the 14th Jan., 1804.

THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA now all men by these present that I, JOHN GREENING, Planter, of Claremont County, in the State aforesaid, in consideration of the sum of Three Hundred Dollars tome paid by MICAJAH MOORE, of the County & State aforesaid, have granted, bargained, sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, & sell and release unto the said MICAJAH MOORE all that part or parcel., of Land of One Hundred & Fifty Acres, being part of a Tract of Land, originally granted to SAMUEL HELTON the first day of January, 1785, for 640 Acres, and hath such form marks: buttings and boundings as more fully appear by a plat (Certified by Richard Moore, .Deputy Surveyor the 9th day of November, 1804), thereof hereunto annexed, together with all and singular the rights, members hereditaments and appurtenances belonging to the said premises or in any wise incident or appertaining.  To have and to hold all and singular the premises before mentioned unto the said MICAJAH MOORE,' his heirs, & assigns forever.- And I do hereby bind myself, my Heirs, Executors, & Administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said premises unto the said MICAJAH MOORE his Heirs and Assigns, against myself, and my Heirs and against every person whomsoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof. - Witness my hand and Seal this Twenty-Sixth day of November, In the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the Twenty-eighth.

Planter, in consideration of one thousand  dollars to me paid by WILLIAM WATSON of the said District and State have granted, bargained, sold and released, and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and release unto the said WILLIAM WATSON, all that tract or plantation of land, containing eighty-six and one half acres, situate lying and being in the District and State aforesaid,' bounding on and to the Westward of the main public road leading from Camden to Stateburgh, on or near dry swamp, being part of a tract of one hundred thirty-six acres, three roads, sold and conveyed by General THOMAS SUMTER to JOHN  JEFFERSON now deceased, by deed of release bearing date of tenth day of December, A.D., 1798, and was on a Writ of partition of the estate of the said JOHN JEFFERSON, deceased and pursuant to the return of the commissioners ordered by the Judges of the Court of Common pleas of the said District to be sold for the benefit of his heirs, and purchased by the said JOHN GREENING as may appear by a deed from John Conyers, Sheriff, of the said District bearing date of the fourth day of January, 1808, recorded in the registers office of SUMTER District Book CC, Page 49 to 51, reference being thereunto had, and to the reason of the said Writ of partition and also to the plat of the part hereby conveyed certified by Hasten Jennings, Deputy Surveyor and hereunto annexed further partition may appear.,-Together with all and singular the rights, members, hereditaments and appurtenances to the said premises belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining - To have and to hold all and singular the premises before mentioned and to the said WILLIAM WATSON his heirs, and assigns forever, and I do hereby bind myself, my heirs, Executors and Administrators to Warrant and forever defend all and singular the said premises unto the said WILLIAM WATSON his heirs and assigns against myself, and my heirs and against every person whomsoever, lawfully claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof-Witness my hand and seal this tenth day of June, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nine, and in the thirty-third year of the Independence of the United States of America.

In the Name of God, Amen, I, JOHN GREENING, of Sumter District and State of South Carolina, Planter, being in perfect health, mind and memory. Thanks be to God, do Make and Ordain this my Last Will & Testament, wrote with my own hand in Manner and form following, viz;

I do will and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Mary Greening, the following three Negroes; Sarah, her son July and daughter Milly, house things, bed and furniture, to be hers and assigns forever.

ITEM:  I Will and. Bequeath unto my sons, as follows:  Wade Horace Greening, Eldridge Swepson Greening, and John James Greening , when either marries or arrives to the age of twenty-one years old, three Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty years, good horse and saddle, three cows and calves, bed and furniture to each.

ITEM:  I will and bequeath unto my son Rufus William Greening, four Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty years old, two of which Negroes I wish to (be) boys  and bound with him to what trade he may best like at the age of seventeen, and be his at twenty one years old which will be the time of his freedom, good horse and saddle, three cows and calves, bed and furniture, all to be delivered at the time he is twenty one years old or marries.

ITEM:  I will and bequeath unto my daughter,  Elizabeth Ann Greening, when she marries or arrives at the age of eighteen years old, three Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty  years old, a good horse, three cows and calves, bed and furniture.

ITEM:  I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Mary Whitehead Greening, when she. arrives to the age of fifteen years old three Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty years old, a good horse, three cows and calves, bed and furniture.

ITEM:  I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Amanda Poleen Greening, three Negroes between the age of twelve and twenty years old, horse, three cows and calves, bed and furniture.

ITEM;  It is my will and desire that in case my wife should be pregnant at the time of my death, that the child shall share equal, with Wade, Eldridge, John, Elizabeth, Mary and Amanda Greening, both of real and personal property.

ITEM:  It is my will that all my lands in this State be sold for the purpose of paying my debts and that a tract at the discretion of my Executors be bought for the use of my family and to work my Negroes on until my daughter Mary Whitehead Greening becomes fifteen years old then those that have not received their Legacy as above named to receive it and the remainder to be equally divided amongst my children without a sail of the personal property.

ITEM:  Should my wife marry, it is my will that she receive Sarah, July and Milly, horse    - chair, bed and furniture in lieu of Dower.

ITEM:  It is my desire that should my Executors, after selling my lands, find it actually necessary to dispose of more property for the purpose of paying my just debts that they sell Martin, a Blacksmith, Long Bob, and wife, Abigail.

ITEM:  My will is that my property be kept together for the supporting of my family and educating my children until any may marry then they may receive their Legacy and have no further support from the Estate until the final division when all the last must be sold and divided amongst my children equal.

LASTLY, I do will. Ordain and Constitute my beloved wife, Mary Greening, Executrix during her widowhood. Wade H. Greening and Clark Taylor, in Georgia, my Lawful Executors of this my Last Will and Testament.

In witness where unto I set my hand and seal this the seventh day of October in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifteen.

SUMTER DISTRICT                           )       Know all men by these presents, that we MARY GREENING and WADE H. GREENING, Executrix and Executor of the last Will and testament of JOHN GREENING, deceased, of the District aforesaid, for and in consideration of nine hundred dollars to us paid by HEZEKIAH NETTLES of the District and State aforesaid, have granted, bargained, sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and release unto the said
HEZEKIAH NETTLES, all that plantation or tract of land WHEREON WE NOW LIVE, containing Three hundred and thirty-two acres, it being the balance of a tract of land originally granted to SAMUEL HELTON, and lying on the W. Side of the run of Nasty Branch, waters of Black River, and hath such form, buttings and boundings as will more fully appear in a platt certified by James Leech, Depy. Survr.  the 15th day of Jany., 1815.-Together with all and singular the rights, members, herditaments, and appurtenances to the premises belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining.  -To have and to hold all and singular the premises before mentioned unto the said HEZEKIAH NETTLES, his heirs, Executors, Administrators and Assigns forever.  And we do hereby bind ourselves, our heirs, Executors and Administrators to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said premises unto the said HEZEKIAH NETTLES, his heirs and assigns, against ourselves, our heirs, and against every person or persons whomsoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof.  Witness our hands and Seals this __ day of December, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and eighteen, and the forty second and forty-third year of the Independence of America

John Greening's widow and children moved to Dallas, Conecuh, Baldwin Co, ala,in early 1819,  where his Widow Mary Whitehead Greening married her widowed brother-in-law, John Gayle, Sr, prior to 1823.
