Most researchers who have studied this family are aware of the late Sharon J. Doliante's comprehensive work Maryland & Virginia Colonials ,  first published in 1991, now (spring, 2004) in its fourth printing.  The intent of these pages is to augment and in one or two instances correct information published therein regarding the ancestors and descendants of Josiah & Judith [Elmore] Williams. See Doliante for a full record on other lines as noted below.

1.  JOSIAH3 WILLIAMS  (PHILIP I2, UNKNOWN1) was born Abt. 1765 in VA, and died Abt. January 5, 1826 in Autauga cty., AL.  He married JUDITH ELMORE May 4, 1785 in Amelia Cty. VA, daughter of ARCHELAUS ELMORE and SUSANNAH MORRIS .  She was born Abt. 1766 in VA, and died Aft. November 21, 1840 in Alabama.  Her will was written and probated in  Tallapoosa cty., AL

More About JOSIAH WILLIAMS:
Bequeathed 324 ac. "home place" in will of Philip Williams Sr. Amelia, VA, prob. 28 Dec 1786  In that will the surnames of Josiah, two of his brothers and two of his sisters are given as "Williams alias Hundley", causing some doubt amoung researchers as to whether they were issue, legitimate or otherwise, of Philip's. Thanks to Williams family researcher Tiffany Luchetta's prompt request for and transcription of newly microfilmed Virginia chancery court records, we now know that this was simply a device to identify children from a second marriage, and that Josiah & his full siblings were the children of Philip and his second wife, Elizabeth Hundley, daughter of Wilkinson Hundley who d. 1772 (will prob. Gloucester, VA). font>

Resided Amelia cty.,[ref. tax lists, probate ct. records there] until ~1796/97 when he sold for L446,to Booker Foster, 380 ac. [adj Phil. Wms.,Ben Overton, Tho.Atkinson, est. Rowlett Pride, Wm.Dearing,Dan'l.Wms.,A.&J.League, Justices Thos.Elmore &Matt.Robertson  sent to get dower cons.Judith Elmore who could not travel to court].  Subsequently, Josiah disappeared off the Amelia cty., tax roll. Josiah & family were in Laurens, SC by 1802, and probably in Bedford, VA between 1797-1802 [ref. Laurens dist, Equity cty. rcds.]

In 1813 Josiah assigned Power of Attorney "to take charge of all my property" to his son Josiah Hundley Williams.  By Dec. 1817 he had deeded or sold much if not all of his property to him, and moved to central Alabama Territory along with a large contingent of Elmores, Williams, Jordans, Craddocks, Saxons, et al..

Josiah's will was written 04 Jan, 1826 Autauga cty., AL, naming sons Josiah, John, Warner, Daniel, Thomas J., daus.  Elizabeth Louisa, Nancy, Martha;
wife Judith;  witnessed by B.H. Crawford, John Lewis, Mary A. Lewis.  He died before 04 Apr that year when John Lewis att. to the will in Autauga probate ct. [DB-B, VII, p.75-76]

More About JUDITH ELMORE:
Born around the time her father Archelaus Elmore died,  ~17 Jun 1765.  Parentage proven by Amelia county orphans' ct. records, et al.  Pat. 147 ac.in in sec 30, T18N/R18E Elmore (then Autauga) cty., AL, adj. her niece Sophia Saxon Elmore Ross, to whom she sold the land in 1833.  Three to six years before that she had moved her household from Autauga cty. to Perry cty., near her dau. Louisa Williams DuBois [ref. memoirs of John DuBois, pub. 1998 by Elizabeth DuBois Russo as Necessary Fried Chicken.] .  She was enumerated in the 1830 Perry cty. census as HoH containing 1 male <5 and 1 male 5-10, 1 female 15-20 (dau. Patsy), 1 female 60-70(herself), 1 male slave <10, 3 male slaves 10-24, a female slave <10, and a female slave >100[sic].  It's unknown who the young males in the HH were. Judith's will was written Tallapoosa 21 Nov 1840, and wit. by James D. Giles & G.Y. Speake, the latter of whom was a near neighbor of Judith's son Josiah H. Williams.  The will mentions all chn. by name, but refers to Daniel indirectly,  in the context of grandson Thomas P. Williams "only heir" of son Daniel.  Sons Warner & Thomas J. were named exctrs.  Exact date of death unknown, but undated records in Tallapoosa cty. show that the estate was put through probate there.  Citations re. the estate were issued to all chn., including Daniel.  Son John E. and dau. Elizabeth Wilkinson  were cited by publication, as they lived out of state.

Only known extant record in Laurens is the deposition given 1811 in legal separation of his parents.  First known record in Alabama is as guardian to the orphans of Joseph Lewis (1825, multiple entries, Autauga Deeds & Mtgs., Book A).  Also extant are land grant, Autauga, 1828, and a deed for sale of same to Howell Rose, 1829.  Last probative record is land grant Tallapoosa 1837, T21N R21W, where three of his bros. & a probably nephew pat. land at same time.  Doliante incorrectly concluded that Daniel predeceased his mother, but Tallapoosa census and marriage records disprove this.

More About SAMUEL D. WILLIAMS
Pat. 40 ac. in T13N R13E Tallapoosa, AL, adj. Josiah H., Daniel, Warner, & Thos. J. Williams patents of same date.  Deed from father-in-law J.E. Hewitt, Autauga, AL, 1841.  Hewitt memorandum at Louisiana State Hist. Soc. says this is when J.E. Hewitt & family relocated to DeSoto Par., LA.  Samuel D. & Margaret [Hewitt] Williams were in Louisiana by 1843, as census reflects birth of second son in LA, first son (1841) in AL.  They were enumerated in the 1850 DeSoto Par. census (in same hh were her sister Mary F., and Warner Williams, 23 AL, musician, relationship to Sam'l. unknown, probably brother or cousin).   Index to DeSoto succession records has entries for both Samuel & Margaret, both dated 21 Jul 1857, but it's unclear as to whether  both were deceased by that time.  There is an entry (single individual hh) in the 1860 DeSoto par. census for S.D. Williams, 44, farmer, b. SC.  Need to copy full record on both.  It is NOT PROVEN that Samuel is the son of Josiah Hundley Williams.  Have so placed him because he's clearly a member of same family, and Josiah H. is the only son of Josiah Sr. & Judith [Elmore] Williams known to have been married at the time Samuel was born.   Samuel had three pats. in DeSoto par..  Some of his land was adj.  Benjamin A. Williams (b. MS, per census)  and Patrick C. Williams.  Relationship, if any, is unknown at this time.
