dreams
the roof leaks
- drip, drip, drip -
onto the carpet in front of the baptistry,
by the communion table.
high up in the dome
the pigeons dream
of messages and grain.
- an empty, dark, peaceful sanctuary
on saturday night.
*
a manger scene rests between performances,
minus the porcelin baby "j"
who waits in the wings
for his cue.
*
for 2,000 years he is born
and born again, reappearing in that manger
on christmas day:
the faithful rejoice, offering hymns and prayers
- he hasn't let them down yet.
*
stained glass windows
tell the stories of disciples, angels,
revelations and baptisms,
backlit by the moon
and city lights.
dreams of paradise
rise from the pews,
filter thru those windows,
disappear into the rainy night.
*
the roof continues to leak
- drip, drip drip -
the custodian places a bucket
in just the right place....
