THE SADEIAN VEIL
THE SADEIAN VEIL
Imagine for a moment that your thoughts, charged by your darkest sexual desire take on a life of their own. The movie THE SADEIAN VEIL, shows how authority figures are sytematically and brutally being murdered by a raging prerevolutionary French maiden whose misanthropic spirit is invoked by a neurotic psychiatrist's repressed sexuality (incarnus sexualis).
This "filme noir" subtly weaves a plot where a detective is diabolically lured into a love triangle emanating from an antithetical S&M backdrop in the underground dungeons of pain in New York City. A metaphysical overtone is added when one of the angles of that triangle is both a past-life reincarnation and the secondary split personality of a demented psychiatrist lost in the eternal clamor of the psyche for power.
This particular genre of movie should appeal to a large audience which is obviously already being drawn to similar themes with aggressive female leads symbolizing the ever-escalating feminist movement and women's rights issues (Single White Female, Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, etc.) Almodovar's movie, Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down, drew an inordinately large audience in spite of its simplistic plot (not to mention that it was a foreign film) because of its title's implications of the controversial subject of bondage and its "forbidden fruit" allure.
Sado-masochism, of late, has slowly been crawling out of the closets and dungeons of the social unconscious (even to be discussed on TV shows such as Bob Berkowitz and Geraldo) reflecting an attitude in mass psychology that can be attributable to the effort of men to remain"dominant" socially and sexually in the face of a swelling tidal wave of female rebellion. By repressing and denying their feminine aspect in spite of its fight for recognition and acceptance as a mandatory evolutionary movement towards a more balanced human existence, they are creating a conflict and a market for an audience that is very likely to turn to the movies in an attempt to externalize and resolve its dilemmma.
The virtual non existence of a movie precedent allowing the socially unacceptable feminine portrayal of fury, aggression and dominance, coupled with voluntary male submission, would perfectly set the stage for a sexual taboo-shattering shocker which would undoubtedly direct awareness to the vital import of embracing and integrating the feminine variable as well as draw a good portion of movie and video viewers.
