Max - 2/14/90 - 12/17/01 In Loving Memory of Our Dog, Our Best Friend

I remember that fluffy little poof of a dog that my husband brought home, ears all crooked across the top of his head, paws bigger than a light-bulb.

What are we going to name him?

Skis in hand, my hubby left for the weekend and my son and I were left to name this little bundle. This little bundle came with a blanket, a pet toy, a dog dish and twenty pounds of puppy food. Someone knew this was no little puffy wonder.

With a cute little yawn and blinking eyes, this little guy looked like he had been chewing on licorice sticks. What kind of dog was this?

There is definately Lab in there, but near the surface of his skin there was a layer of fluffy cotton fur. Could he be part Chow Chow? They are noted for a black tongue.

Whatever he was he was cute and cuddly and he needed a name. My son was in love. In third grade and with his very own dog. It was an instant bond. But what to name him?

I left it up to my son and thus this little bundle became Max. Our loving and faithful companion. A warm and friendly dog, good natured, yet protective. He took his job as watch dog seriously.

During nearly the last 12 years Max has given us companionship, love, and protection. He has been on adventures, made neighborhood friends, adopted our neighbors as his second family, and put up with the birth of our daughter in January 1998.

His unconditional love has never waivered.

In the spring of 2001, Max was diagnosed with Leukemia.

We had noticed his rapid weight loss but his disposition was terrific. His "Spring Tune-Up" as my husband always called his annual checkup, revealed the bad news.

So we played the waiting game.

Journey On

We loved you everyday Max.

We have done our best to keep you comfortable, to show you love, and to hold you close in our hearts.

We were there for you in your time of need as you had always been the one to ease our stresses with your wagging tail and happy disposition.

Our lives are forever more enriched because you have been in them.

We love you Max. Yesterday and today as you travel to the Next Place. Where forever, you are running on the beach, free, and happy and full of spirit. Forever our Max. Forever our friend.

We will miss you. We do miss you.
