Proposed Backup Crew for the Apollo E mission
The third Apollo mission announced on December 22, 1966 was a test of the Apollo lunar module in a very high Earth orbit. A Saturn V would have placed the spacecraft in the high Earth orbit. The Apollo E mission was cancelled after a decision to beat the Russians around the Moon in late 1968.
