Hiram C. Martin was born in Milan, Dutchess County, NY on 22 October 1822. His grandfather, George Martin, was a farmer in that county during the time of the Revolutionary War and resided there until his death. Caleb "Dakins" Martin, a son of George, was reared in Milan, Dutchess County. He married a Miss Cortol (??) and they had at least 8 children; Alexander, John, William, Hiram*, Garrett, Oliver, Uriah, and Henry. Later, Dakins and his wife moved to Wisconsin with one of their sons an remained there the rest of their lives. The sources for this excerpt include the following; "Biographical Review - Broome Co., NY, 1894 - - The leading citizens of Broome Co., NY"; published in 1894.; Hiram C. Martin's Civil War service records; NY State and Federal census records; Hiram C. Martin's probate records; Various birth, death, and burial records.Hiram was only 11 years old when he was compelled to take on the burden of earning his own living. He eventually married Miss Sarah A. Martin, a daughter of Lott and Ruth Martin, also of Dutchess Co., NY. It is still uncertain if there was any familial relationship between these two Martin families. Hiram lived as a laborer in Dutchess County until sometime between 1855-60, then in Binghamton by 1860 until 1862, when he enlisted in the Civil War. During his service as a horse farreir, he became too ill to continue his service and received an honorable discharge. A previously written biography of him states that he was discharged due to injuries sustained when he was kicked by a horse. However, upon examination of his war records, this was clearly not the case.
After the War, Hiram and his family relocated a short distance away, to the town of Union, Broome County, NY, where he owned a small farm. Hiram and Sarah had 2 children, Mary Ophelia and Andrew B. Martin. Mary Ophelia Martin married Oliver Gibbs of Union, and their children were Hattie and Frank Gibbs. Before her marriage to Oliver Gibbs, Mary Ophelia Martin had a child named Herman Martin. Herman was raised by his grandparents, Hiram and Sarah Martin. At this point it is not known who Herman's father was, or whether or not he was born out of wedlock.
Andrew Martin married Miss Mary Shafer, and they had one child, Cora. Mary Shafer Martin also had a daughter named Hattie, who was about five years old when Cora was born. Hattie is listed as Hattie Martin in their household on the 1875 census, but it is doubtful that she was Andrew's natural daughter. Mary Shafer Martin died in August, 1875, shortly after Cora's birth. Cora was then raised by her mother's parents, the Shafers. Andrew Martin married again to Hattie Frisbie in Nov. 1876. Their son, Charles 'Fay' Martin, was born in Oct. 1878. Sometime after 1880, Andrew and Hattie divorced, and Andrew married again to Miss Jennie Newton, and they had a son named Frank. Andrew then died in Dec. 1883. As of Hirams' death in 1906, Frank was residing in Brooklyn, NY. Hattie Frisbie Martin remarried to Edward Sweeney of Owego, NY, where they resided until Hattie's death in Oct. 1884. Charles 'Fay' Martin was then raised in Owego by his maternal grandmother, Sarah Fuller Frisbie.
Hiram C. Martin died in June 1906 of an injury to his lung after a fall. His wife Sarah died before him in 1892 of apoplexy.
As an additional point of interest, the daughter of Mary Ophelia Gibbs, Hattie Gibbs, married Simeon Spangenburg. They had at least 8 children and resided in the Binghamton area.
