Proposed Device

Marion Bowyere was born in Berkshire in the year of our Lord 1343. Her father, Edmund le Bowyere, is a bow maker by trade and his business flourished when what came to be known as the Hundred Years’ War began in 1337. When Marion was only four years old, her father was one of the first merchants sent to inhabit the channel port of Calais, recently seized by King Edward III in the name of England. All French were driven out of the city and English merchants were sent to establish the town.

That same year, a terrible plague swept over Calais and the British Isles. Marion lost her mother and infant sister. Death filled the airs of Calais, but the young girl lived and so brings us to her story today…

The year is 1366. Marion is twenty-three years old and unmarried. She gave her heart to a Scotsman named Mata mac Mingus, a sailor and soldier, almost three years ago. But her sailor has not returned for many months and may have perished in the wars to the North, where he fights against her own people. As she grows older, her father has become concerned. She is nearing the age of an unmarriageable woman and cannot soon continue in the household and business. Her only brother is to wed this year and will take over the trade of their father with his new wife. She must find an appropriate husband or join a convent… Edmund knows all too well of this Scotsman who has stolen his daughters heart and he will not have such an unsuccessful marriage in his family.

“Months ago, my father sent me away. My unyielding resistance to not marry another has left him few choices. He sent me to the Middle Kingdom, to the Shire of Rivenvale, and so I reside in the household Gryphon’s Rest under Lord Rickard de Als, a longtime family friend. Here, I have been given the freedom to explore my interests, including needlepoint, calligraphy, soap making, herbs, sewing, and archery. I contently serve my new lord and household with the love and affection of my own family until, someday, my Scotsman returns for me…”
