Welcome to the Teardrop Mystery Page Number Five!

I had a recent email that brought back to memory a letter that I had read several years ago. I dug through my files and found it. Amazing! It was from fall of '96... Below are excerpts from the letter.

Known Information

From Canada
...my mentioning a fiberglass teardrop at a local RV dealer. I'm trying to get my hands on it (it's been sitting there gathering dust for a number of years because of some dispute between the dealer and the supplier). At any rate, it is a made in the USA item, from an outfit called American Teardrop, Inc. I could not find any other specs on it i.e. serial number, etc.

An interesting concept. What does the shape remind you of?

Answer from the United States
About 10 years ago, I came across an American Teardrop on an RV lot in Medford, OR. I snooped around and generally checked it out - I don't recall if I picked up any literature or not. I do remember that all the doors had gas strut supports, that it was just a basic shell, and that it smelled very strongly of styrene and plastic after sitting in the hot sun all day. And I believe it was priced at around $2000.

Thanks George you are a gem!!! this is exactly the unit. Here is some more info I found. Another teardrop builder in northern California states that he saw sales literature from American Teardrop showing large numbers of these units queued up outside the humming factory, but that there apparently were rain leak problems with the gullwing doors that persisted. I can believe this, as it appears the door seal has to cross the parting line between the top molding and the bottom one. I have long thought that in general this is a cool way to build a teardrop and am intrigued with the possibility of retooling the door area to address this shortcoming.

I'd love to get a line on one for sale!

Thanks again for your great web site!!!
