Principles of Scouting
Last Modified: 9/9/2001
Overview
- Scouting is a program that helps the Scouts understand their role in their family, community, and in their faith. Another goal of Scouting is introduce them to professions of work. But it must be undertood that while attempting to acheive these goals, all activities are to be first and foremost ... "FUN".
- Cub Scouting especially, creates an environment for parents and their sons to work on activities together, thus opening a line of communication that will last a life time.
- Therefore, Parental involvement is critical to a Scout getting the most out of the program.
Goals of Each Scout Rank
- Tiger Cubs - The Tiger Cub Progam is structured for 1st Graders. The premise of the Tiger Cub Program is to "Search", "Discover", and "Share". Each Tiger Cub works with their Tiger Cub Partner (Parent or Gaurdian) on activities at home. Then at their Monthly Tiger Den meeting, the Tiger Cubs share with each other what they have found and learned. - Wolf and Bear Cubs - The rank of Wolf is a 2nd Grader's Program and the rank of Bear is a 3rd Grader's program. The underlying themes are Duty to God, Country, Family and Self. During these two years the Scouts begin to work as a small organized group lead by at least 2 adult Den leaders. The program still encourages the Scouts to work with their parents at home on various activities but begins the effort of teaching them how to work together as a team. - WEBELOS Cubs - WEBELOS is a 4th and 5th Grade structured program. It is during these two years that the Scouts work even more independently, encouraging them to rely more on each other, again encouraging team work. As Boy Scouts they will be placed in the position of organizing their own Patrols activities and then appointing a patrol leader to lead it. The boys are also, introduced even more directly to future careers. Many of the activity badges they will work on, focus' on a discipline of work, such as Engineering.
