Aircraft Noise: The Conspiracy of Silence

Dear Editor,

In your 2/28/98 editorial "Ring Out The Noise" you list all sorts of noise that New Yorkers have to endure, yet you, like Mayor Giuliani, mysteriously leave out the worst noise producer of all, the New York metropolitan area’s three airports, JFK, LaGuardia and Newark.

LaGuardia Airport alone tops the list of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s list of U.S. airport’s that inflict high levels of noise pollution on residential areas with 194,972 people impacted. This is believed to be far below the actual amount as the Port Authority figures are based on information from the few noise monitors they have put in areas which are not impacted by the highest levels of noise.

While LaGuardia injures the most people’s health with toxic levels of noise it does have the extremely serious, sleep disturbing night operations that JFK Airport does. Scientific studies show that these night flights are especially harmful to senior citizens and children. It seems to be a bit ludicrous to be giving tickets for 80 decibel boom boxes and parties at night when 90 decibel plus planes are screaming overhead. Most of these night flights are overnight cargo deliveries. Is it more important that people get overnight deliveries than New Yorkers sleep?

I am glad to see that noise pollution is being focused on by Mayor Giuliani and the Post. But I would really like to know why the most flagrant polluter, the Port Authority, is avoided being even mentioned. When it comes to aircraft noise there seems to be a conspiracy of silence!
