2005 is the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the school,
and 2006 is scheduled to be the opening of the new replacement school.

Work on Bedminster Down School
began summer of 2004 and is due to open in Easter 2006.

Bristol City Council signed a financial agreement with Bristol Schools Ltd, the company set up by HBG Construction Ltd. to oversee the construction and management of four new school construction projects.

The contract for the building and management of the schools will run for a period of 26 years after which the schools will become the property of the LEA.

Work begins on Bedminster Down School

For the first time in over thirty years, a brand new secondary school is being built in Bristol South, part of Labour's multi-million pound investment in the city's schools. The building work, which began during the summer, is due to be completed in 2006.

"Bristol's students and teachers have had to put up with crumbling buildings for far too long", Dawn says. "So, naturally, I am thrilled to see that work has finally started on transforming Bedminster Down School".

With a clear link between modern well-maintained schools and high levels of pupil attainment, Labour's aim is to provide surroundings that inspire and motivate. "We need a radical new approach to our school buildings so we create environments in which teachers want to teach and pupils want to learn", Dawn continues.

Labour is embracing this new approach by increasing capital investment to a record £6.78bn in 2007/08. Bristol is at the forefront of this programme, with Bedminster Down one of eleven local secondary schools scheduled for a makeover in the next few years.
