Monthly Program Preview

The February 2003 meeting will be held on the 1st Wednesday (Feb 5 at 7pm) at the office of Stiefvater Consultants in the Griffiss Business and Technology Park. See page 6 for directions.

Our technical program at the February meeting will be a presentation by Russ Brown, WB2JIL. He will talk about and demonstrate filter design and simulation using RFSim99. This software is a free download from: http://rf.rfglobalnet.com/software_modeling/software/2/710.htm . In addition to filter design, the program can synthesize matching networks, and analyze many types of RF networks using both lumped components and transmission lines.

If you have a project or topic to present at a future club meeting, please let us know!

Russell Brown, Program Director

Email: wb2jil@arrl.net

Public Service

Our club has a long history of being a special service club. In the past, we have supported the Honor America Days Parade, the Drums Along the Mohawk, the race in Westmoreland, and the Pumpkin Patrol (just to name a few).

Does anyone know of any upcoming Public Service Events? Let me know!

EC Corner

If you are not an ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) member, please consider joining. ARES is our front line in any communication emergency. For more information, or to get an application to join, contact our Oneida-Madison Counties Emergency Coordinator (EC), Frank Reynolds (N2FHR), or his Assistant EC, Michael Little (KB2CCD).

Jan. 2003 Emergency Coordinator's Report - Things happened in January for ARES.

At the request of the Utica Red Cross we had a meeting on the 22nd with representatives of the Red Cross, the Utica Amateur Radio Club, and myself. A new Statement of Understanding has been signed at the national level between the Red Cross and the ARRL and the Utica Red Cross would like to implement it. We discussed the role of hams serving the Red Cross (as communicators only) and their equipment. The results of this discussion will be presented to the Utica club at their next meeting for their response.

On the 28th Al Topalian, N2CCN, SEC for Western New York, Mike Little, AEC, and I met with Fred Van Namee, of the Oneida County Office of Emergency Services. It was a very productive meeting with agreement to cooperate fully. Both Mike Little and I will join the county planning commission to further development of our activities.

The OMEN net night has changed. Starting 4 February the net will be held the 1st Tuesday of the month at 7:15 P.M. on the 145.17 repeater. Please check in as things will be happening and you will be needed.

(ED - Don’t forget to check into both the Oneida/Madison Emergency Net (OMEN) and the Central District Emergency Net. These are good places to practice your emergency skills and to gain new ones that may help save lives in the future.)

From the Editor

Please continue to give me feedback on the newsletter. Last month’s edition had a number of typos and errors. Most of the errors were corrected on the copy that was posted on the club web page.

As you should have noticed by now, we changed our meeting location in Jan. The change in location is due to a schedule conflict with our previous meeting location (for the months of Jan/Feb/Mar). I hope you all give Kenny Stiefvater a big thank you. He is not a Ham (yet - Russ and I am working on him), but is a long time friend of Russ (WB2JIL), Tony (WA2GBE), and myself. He heard of our need and volunteered his facility for our meetings. We had a big challenge conducting a talk-in on the 146.88 repeater. It appears that it has very little coverage on the base or into Floyd. This is a problem. Maybe we can come up with a workable solution to extend its range and make our fine repeater more useful.

Enough of my rambling on. As always, please pass this newsletter on to anyone whom you think can benefit from its content.

73, Mike KB2CCD
