Western New York Section News
Thank you to Vivian WA2PUU for her many years of writing the Amateur Radio column in the STARS section of the Syracuse Newspaper the Post-Standard. As us locals in Syracuse already know the STARS editor decided the Amateur Radio column had to be canceled after almost 40 years of service to the community. We will miss the column and the Amateur Radio news printed weekly in the Sunday Syracuse Post-Standard STARS supplement. A BIG thank you to Vivian WA2PUU for all of the hard work over the many years putting the column together !
Congratulations to Ray Perkins KD2GC on being elected mayor of Akron NY. I bet his honor will not have any antenna problems there ! Time to put up the 100ft tower.
Thanks to Anne WI2G on two years being net manager of the Empire Slow Speed net which meets nightly at 6PM local time on 3590 KHz, Check in sometime, nice group willing to guide your introduction to nets, and a CW speed that will keep you relaxed ! Anne, congratulations on the two years and thanks from everyone for the fine job !
The RDXA cave men report that congratulations are in order to Chris K2CS of the Rochester DX Association, on becoming the Atlantic Division representative to the ARRL DX advisory Committee.
AWA Museum
Ed K2MP and the operators at GB2KZ, Ted G3GMZ, Peter G4JNU and Vic G3SDQ completed a Narrow Band Television (NBTV) transmission from England to the Antique Wireless Association museum in Bloomfield NY. This NBTV transmission was to commemorate the 1928 mechanical TV transmission of John Baird to W2CVJ in Hartsdale NY, the first transatlantic television transmission in history. The NBTV transmission was made with a crystal controlled wideband AM transmitter on 21.310 MHz, in the midst of the usual 15 meter activity. The QRM paused long enough for excellent reception of the NBTV identification of GB2KZ. Visit the AWA web page at www.antiquewireless.org. Thanks to the Rochester Amateur Radio Association RARA Rag for the information.
Further information on the AWA Museum can be had by contacting the Curator, Ed Gable, via k2mp@eznet.net or write the AWA Museum at 187 Lighthouse Rd, Hilton, NY 14468.

Station PSHR Reports
Public Service
Our club has a long history of being a special service club. In the past, we have supported the Honor America Days Parade, the Drums Along the Mohawk, the race in Westmoreland, and the Pumpkin Patrol (just to name a few). This year, we can perform our Public Service by participating in the various ARES public service events.
1 Jun - Tour d'Cure Bike Race at Verona Beach. POC is John, N2UC 865-4926.
28-29 Jun - Field Days.
Boilermaker Race in Utica.
26 July - Honor America Days Parade in Rome. POC is John, KC2GJM 336-7642.
EC Corner
The first ARES activity of the year was a success. The Utica MS walk had no incidents. Thanks to KB2MAS - Russ, KC2HSU - Chris, N2SMJ - Dave, W2SRC - Steve, and W5IXM - Dave. (Nice to see a reference to Dave in the April QST under his old call sign WA2ANU (p 41)).
There has still been no word from Oneida County on either the Emergency Planning Commission or their appointment of a Radio Officer.
Upcoming events:
1 Jun - Tour d'Cure Bike Race at Verona Beach. POC is John, N2UC 865-4926.
28-29 Jun - Field Days.
Boilermaker Race in Utica.
26 July - Honor America Days Parade in Rome. POC is John, KC2GJM 336-7642.
More on these items as the word trickles in. Join in the fun. You might really like it!
OMEN meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7:15 P.M. on the 145.17 repeater. Please check in as things will be happening and you will be needed.

From the Editor
Please continue to give me feedback on the newsletter.
Spring is here - finally. If you are like me, you are thinking of antennas (maybe to replace one that came down during one of the winter storms). This month’s QST has an article about how to build your own discone antenna. If you have read the article, you probably have noticed that our own Dave (W5IXM) is referenced for his work with discone antennas in the past.
