Post 2088 History
1986-1999

Gore Mtn. Ski Trip 1986 - Original Members of Post 2088 at Camp Read Farm house.

Our WEBMASTER is the guy on the left with the mop.

Explorer Post 2088, now Adventure Crew 2088 was formally chartered in April of 1986 with the names of 15 Explorers.  Prior to 1986 these same charter members were registered as either Boy Scout's or Girl Scouts in our community.  In 1985, Mr. and Mr's G., (they are our leaders) organized a joint, outing to visit the Saratoga Battle field in upstate N.Y.  This outing was a tremendous success and upon returning home thought was given to forming a co-ed Scout Group, namely us.

The Charter was drawn up in 1986 with the parents of those first Explorers acting as the Sponsors of the Post.  Since that time Mr.G. has been the Post Advisor, and Mrs. G. has been the Committee Chairman and Institutional Representative.  The Post was formed as a High Adventure and Community Service Post.

Community Service, Hiking, and Skiing filled the Post agenda in our formative years and to this day these activities still account for most of our activities. Post 2088 Hike

Both Mr. and Mrs. G. became skiers after taking the Post on numerous ski trips in those first years.  They must have grown tired of watching those earlier members on the slopes.

As word spread throughout the local schools and troops, the Post began to grow.  Trips were made to Lake George N.Y., with the Post camping at Westchester-Putnam Council's Camp Read.  These trips to Lake George introduced us to Para-sailing.

Hot Air Ballooning, White water rafting, Rock Climbing and Repelling and an increasing request for support by both the Boy and Girl Scout councils added to our program.  Service to Scouting was now added to Service to the Community.

In 1987 we supported our first Cub Scout Activity when we ran a first aid station at the Muscoot District's Klondike Derby.  Actually, we took over this event from the Boy Scouts who were members of the Post at that time and had been running the station since 1980.  We added the feminine touch to the event.  We run this station with a M*A*S*H* 4077 theme and this year will be our 11th year running this event.

In 1993 our Council ran a Council wide Cub Scout activity called the Thunderbird Games.  We were asked to come up with a program for the Tiger Cubs.  In 1998, Thunderbird 6 was attended by over 4,500 scouts and parents, with approximately 900 individuals ( Tigers, parents, and siblings) going through our area.  This event really taxes our crew power as we design and supervise 16 different events for the Tiger Cubs.

If you like to ski, Mr. & Mrs. G. are always willing to take us with them when they go skiing.  A number of our members have gone to Vermont, Colorado and Utah with them.

Seen here in the picture on the right are two members of our Post who joined Mr. and Mrs. G. on a Colorado Ski Trip. Adriana, next to Mrs. G. was a member of the Ski Team in High School. Next to Adriana, is Jen; who was the starting Center on the N.Y. State Girls Championship Basketball team that year. Mr.and Mrs. G., Adriana and Jen
In the fall of the year you will find us out on the Appalachian Trail.  If you check out the Photo Section of our site you will find pictures of this and other events.

The Summer finds us white water rafting, canoeing, and/or tubing on the rivers of upper New York State, Pennsylvania, or Connecticut.  Another favorite summer activity takes place on Block Island where we spend the better part of a week camping, biking, and swimming.

Block Island - Trips to this beautiful Island go back to 1980 when the first male members of the Post were still Boy Scouts. In recent years our Post has added this trip to our agenda. We leave the mainland on a Sunday morning, returning home on the following Wednesday. We set up camp on the island, rent bikes, and spend the remainder of the time on the beach or biking around the island. Parents, this is where we need your help.

Many families join their Explorer son or daughter on Block Island and make this trip part of their summer vacation.

Tubing on the Farmington. Another fun activity which takes place in the summer is tubing on the Farmington River located at Satan's Kingdom in the state of Connecticut. This can be a mild relaxing trip down the river. Or, a wild adventure depending on the water level. This trip is also open to all Explorer family members.
