First Generation

1. Peter Shoecraft (also referred to as Johan Petrus Schukraff, Schuhkraf or Zugraft in liturature) believed to be born in Germany around 1727.  He married Sara Rosa at the Old Dutch Church, Kingston, Ulster County NY 10 JUN 1754. They lived in the jurisdiction of Horli (Hurley) as a farmer.  He is listed on the muster rolls of the New York Provincial Troops 06 APR 1758 under Capt. Hardenburgh. Peter died in 1790 at about 63 years of age.

Sara (Zara) Rosa was born in Kingston, Ulster Co. NY and baptized 24 APR 1715 in the Old Dutch Church. She was the daughter of Evert Ro(o)sa and Tietie van Etten. Sara's mother Tietie was the daughter of Jacob Janson van Etten and Annetje Arians.

Children:

ii.   Jacob (3): born 10 MAY 1759 died 17 FEB 1836.

 

Second Generation

2. John Shoecraft: born 15 DEC 1755 in Shawangunk, Ulster County, NY. He married Elizabeth McKee in Cambridge, Washington Co. NY. John served in the Revolutionary army from 1775 to 1781 and received a pension in 1832 for recognition of his service. Moved from Ulster to Penfield, Monroe Co. NY in June 1807. John died 14 APR 1833 in Penfield, Monroe Co. NY at 77 years of age.

Elizabeth was born in the year 1755 in Scotland. She died 19 DEC 1842 in Penfield, Monroe Co. NY at 87 years of age.

Children:

i.    William: born 25 DEC 1786 and married Roxanna. William died in 1865, at Norwick, Connecticut at 78 years of age. They did not have children.

ii.   Sally: born 27 OCT 1788. She married William Harris April 1806. Sally died 09 AUG 1846 at 57 years of age. They had the following children: William, James, George, Robert, Peter, Betsy M., Mary K., Sally and Martha.

iii.  James: born 13 DEC 1790. He married twice: (1) Ruth Pettit born in 29 JUN 1795 Binbrook, Lincoln, Ontario daughter of Sarah Carpenter and John Pettit. Died 18 SEP 1843 Coldwater Branch, MI. Buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Coldwater, MI. (2) Nancy born 1796 and died 1888.

iv.   John S. (4): born 15 NOV 1792 and married Laura Brown 17 SEP 1815.  John died 17 JAN 1879.

v.    Mary Ann: born 19 JUL 1795 and married Lyman Fox.

vi.   George: born 25 AUG 1797 and died in 1798.

vii.  Peter (5): born 01 JUN 1799 and died 03 DEC 1874 at 75 years of age.

 

3. Jacob Shoecraft: born 10 MAY 1759 in Shawangunk, Ulster Co. NY. He married Caroline Sammons 21 APR 1781 at the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Shawangunk, Ulster Co. NY. They lived in the following NY Counties: Duchess, Hawkins and in 1828 the Northern part of Oswego. Both resided with the family of their eldest son Joseph up to the time of their death. Jacob received a pension in 1832 for his military service in the American Revolution. Private 4th Regt Ulster County NY Militia. Jacob was very close with his older brother John. Jacob died 17 FEB 1836 in Orwell, Oswego Co. NY at 76 years of age and was buried in the North Boyleston Cemetery.

Caroline (Catelyntie) Sammons was born on 09 FEB 1753 and died 19 JAN 1834 at 78 years of age. She is buried at the North Boyleston Cemetery. She was the daughter of Dirk (Frederick) Sammons and Marretje Tak. Jacob and Caroline were half-second cousins, once removed. Both are descended from Annetje Adriaensen, Caroline from Annetje's first husband Aart Pietersen Tack and Jacob from Annetje's second husband Jacob Van Etten. Caroline's father's older brother Sampson and his two sons Jacob and Frederick were captured by Joseph Brant (a Mohawk Indian chief named "Thayendanegea" who was allied with the British). They were taken prisoner and sent to Canada and all escaped at different times. Sampson Sammons figured prominently in the early part of the American Revolution. Their tragic suffering and history can be found in the 2nd Volume of Colonel William L. Stone’s "Life of Brant".

i.    Marretye (Polly): born 12 JUN 1783 in Shawangunk, Ulster Co. NY. She married David Pruyn 29 AUG 1799. David was born 1780 and died in 1864. Marretye died 31 JAN 1848 at 64 years of age.

ii.   Joseph (6): born 19 MAY 1787 in Shawangunk, Ulster Co. NY. He married Sarah (Lanah) Calkins. Joseph died 03 FEB 1866 in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY, at 78 years of age.

iii.  Rachel: born 20 DEC 1788 in Shawangunk, Ulster Co. NY. She married Francis Pruyn 29 JAN 1807. Francis was born 1785 and died 1850. Rachel died 16 NOV 1826 in Schuyler, Herkimer Co. NY at 37 years of age.

iv.   Sally: born 07 FEB 1781 in Shawangunk, Ulster Co. NY. She married George Hufstater. George was born 15 OCT 1784. They had one child named Christian.  Sally died 30 OCT 1855 in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY at 64 years of age.

v.    Sara Delana: born 03 JUL 1793 in Shawangunk, Ulster Co. NY. She married Abraham Snyder 25 DEC 1814. Abraham was born 24 APR 1795 and died 26 JAN 1871. Sally died 31 OCT 1871 in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY at 78 years of age.

vi.   Matthew Sammons (7): born 30 MAY 1795 and married Hanna Eva Dillenbech. Matthew died 25 AUG 1875 at 80 years of age.

 

Third Generation

4. John S. Shoecraft: born 15 NOV 1792 and married Laura Brown 17 SEP 1815. John died 17 JAN 1879 at 85 years of age.

Laura was born 30 JUL 1796 and she died 14 JUN 1869 at 72 years of age.

i.       Mariah: born 30 JUN 1816 and married 08 JAN 1840.

ii.   Barnabus(9): born 12 MAY 1818 in Monroe Co.

iii.  John: born 27 MAR 1820 and died 13 JUN 1831.

iv.   Ruth: born 05 FEB 1822 and died 05 JAN 1851.

v.    Miron: born 13 FEB 1824 and married 22 NOV 1849.  He died 16 FEB 1847.

vi.   James: born 14 APR 1826 and married 15 DEC 1847.

vii.  George: born 14 APR 1826 in New York and married 15 DEC 1847.  Believed to have married Lucy (unknown maiden name) and moved to Arkansas. Occupation - farmer. They had at least one child, Charles born around 1868 in Kentucky.

viii. Rosamond: born 03 MAY 1828 and married 15 DEC 1847.

ix.   Ransom: born 17 FEB 1831.

x.    Elizabeth: born JUL 1835.

xi.   Marion: born 17 APR 1838.

 

5. Peter Shoecraft: born 01 JUN 1799 and was married twice: (1) Hanna Ross born 1799 and died in 1826. (2) Mary Ross born in 1809 and died 05 APR 1878. Peter died 03 DEC 1874 at 75 years of age.

Children:

i.    James P. (8): born 17 AUG 1827 and was married two times.

ii.   Hannah: Married Mr. Shuart.  Member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR #37802).  They had at least one child, Gerturde Shuart Tubbs (DAR #42448).

iii.  Helen M.: born 10 MAY 1831 in Penfield, Monroe County, NY.  Married Robert Millar 22 SEP 1863 in Rochester, NY.  Helen died 16 DEC 1923 in Canadaigua, NY at 92 years of age.  Helen was a pioneer leader in the cause of women suffrage. 

iv.   Albert born 1833 in Penfield, NY. Died 14 FEB 1887 Rochester, NY at 53 years of age.

v.    Mary

vi.   Ross Peleg: born 04 JAN 1841 in Penfield, Monroe Co., NY.  He was a veteran of the Civil War, serving with Company “A” 13th NY Volunteer Infantry as a private. Ross was the adjutant of the George H. Thomas Post of the Grand Army of the Republic.  In 1886 he was convicted for adultery and sent to prison in Washington.  He built the first steam ship to be used on Lake Onondaga, NY.  It was an 11 ton steam ship, with prop, named “R.P. Shoecraft” built in 1865 at Mason, NY.  The ship was sold to A. Cook and is listed in the Directory of Marine Interests of the Great Lakes, had an accident and lost at sea.  Lake Shoecraft in Washington State is believed to be named after Ross.  He was a bailiff of the Washington Superior Court for the last ten years of his life.  Ross died of pneumonia 02 JAN 1922 in Olympia, WA at 80 years of age.  Ross married three times: (1) Imogen A. Oviatt born FEB 1843 in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY.  She was married 16 NOV 1863 in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. Imogen died 13 MAR 1871 in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY.  Father Wilson D. Oviatt and Mother Rosilia Green.  Children: Robert M. & Viola.  (2) Annie Monk born 12 NOV 1845 in Selma, Dallas Co., AL.  She married 07 MAY 1874 in Olympia, Thurston Co., WA.  Divorced about 1886 in Olympia, WA. Annie died 13 JUN 1924 Watertown, Jefferson Co., NY.  Father James D. Monk and Mother Sarah Ann McLeod.  (3)  Ella Clark McIrving McDonald born 08 APR 1860 in Olympia, Thurston Co., WA to John Clark and Lura Mix.  Married 23 JUN 1907 in Missoula, Missoula Co., MT.  Ella died 05 APR 1927 in Olympia, Thurston Co., WA.

 

6. Joseph Shoecraft: born 19 MAY 1787 in Shawangunk, Ulster CO. NY. He married Sarah (nicknamed "Lanah") Calkins 07 DEC 1811 in Schuyler, Herkimer Co. NY. Joseph and his brother Matthew were soldiers in the "War of 1812" serving at Sachets Harbor. Joseph served in the 40th Regiment NY militia under Capt. Ruluff Root's Company 05 OCT - 11 NOV 1814. He was active in his community serving as Boyleston Town Clerk in 1828 and then served as Boyleston Town Supervisor from 1830-35, 1838 & 1844. Joseph died 03 FEB 1866 in N. Boylston, Oswego Co. NY at 78 years of age. Buried in N. Boyleston Cemetery.

Lanah was born 16 OCT 1796 and died 25 APR 1876 at 79 years of age.  Her father was Daniel Calkins born 11 JUL 1748 in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut.  Her Mother was Mary Pruyn born 01 OCT 1758. Lanah’s cousins were David and Francis Pruyn who married Joseph's sisters Marretye (Polly) and Rachel Shoecraft (both daughters of Jacob and Caroline Shoecraft).  She is buried in N. Boyleston Cemetery.

i.    Mary: born 15 AUG 1812 and died 26 APR 1832 at 19 years of age.

ii.   Carolina: born 20 SEP 1814.

iii.  Peter (10): born 20 SEP 1815 and died 21 SEP 1863 at 48 years of age.

iv.   Daniel (11): born 20 JAN 1817.

v.    Matthew J.: born 26 OCT 1818 in Herkimer County and died in 05 May 1906 at 87 years of age.  Formerly of Oneida and one of the oldest and most prominent lawyers of Madison county, died at the home of his daughter in Rochester. Graduated from Union college with the class of 1846. In 1849 he was admitted to the bar and in 1850 began his practice in Oneida. At different times he was honored with nominations for Member of Assembly, District Attorney and member of Congress. He also served the village of Oneida as President on various occasions and at the time of his retirement was dean of Madison County Bar Association. Burial was made at Oneida Castle.

vi.   Warren: born 28 JAN 1820.

vii.  Sally: born 02 OCT 1821.

viii. Henry (12): born 1822 in Boylston, NY.

ix.   Martha: born 25 MAR 1825. She married Alonza Miles. Martha died in 1870 at 45 years of age. They had three children: (1) Hattie; (2) Charles born 10 MAY 1855 and married Armenta Gilette 15 APR 1880, she died 21 AUG 1941. Charles died 20 APR 1934; (3) Delainah married her first cousin Milton Nye Shoecraft.

x.    Rachel (the 1st): born 06 MAR 1827 and died 17 NOV 1827.

xi.   Rachel L. (the 2nd): born 16 JUN 1829 and died 1857 and buried in N. Boylston cemetery.  She was the wife of Jacob J. Oderkirk.

xii.  Amos (13): born 28 MAY 1830.

xiii. Francis (14): born 12 MAY 1833 in Boylston, NY.

xiv.  William (15): born 27 OCT 1834. Married Susan Webb 27 DEC 1853 in Oswego County, NY.

xv.   Simon (16): born 22 SEP 1836 and died 10 DEC 1912 at 78 years of age.

xvi.  Virilla: born 17 OCT 1840 in Boylston, NY. Married Mr. Caldwell and lived in Chicago, Illinois.

 

7. Matthew Sammon Shoecraft: born 30 MAY 1795 in Shawangunk, Ulster Co. NY. He married Hannah Eve Dillenbech in 1817 Hallsville, Montgomery Co. NY. In 1823 they moved to Boyleston (then called Orwell) Oswego County. Elected Town Assessor 07 FEB 1828. In the 1840s, they moved to Ellisburg, Jefferson County. Matthew and his older brother Joseph were soldiers in the "War of 1812" and served at Sachets Harbor. Matthew died 25 AUG 1875 in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co. NY at 80 years of age. He is buried in N. Boyleston Cemetery.

Hannah Eve Dillenbech was born 01 AUG 1797 and died 20 NOV 1874 at 77 years of age and buried in N. Boylston Cemetery.

i.    Joseph M. (17): born 07 OCT 1817 and died 13 OCT 1880.

ii.   Nickolas (18): born in Frankfort, Herkimer Co. NY 1819. He married three times: (1) Susan Snyder, born 1823 and died in 1847 at 24 years of age; (2) Mary Jane Tappen; and (3) Mary S. Ingles in Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo, MI 14 JAN 1869.

iii.  Rachael: born 1823 in Ellisburg, NY.

iv.   Carolin: born in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY. She married Charles Molten in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. Children: Herbert, Ed and Frank.

v.    Jacob (19): born 14 FEB 1819 in Frankfort, Herkimer Co. NY. He married Deborah Dingman in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY 05 OCT 1844.

vi.   John (20): born 1826 in Ellisburg, NY.

vii.  Susan M.: born 28 DEC 1829 in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY. She married Allen Remmington at N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Susan died 16 AUG 1886 in Mannsville, in Jefferson, NY and buried in Maplewood Cemetery. Susan and Allen had three children: (1) Rufas Edmund 16 NOV 1850 in Ellisburg, NY He died 11 OCT 1933 in Lacona, NY; (2) Earl born 27 MAY 1871 in NY and died 01 MAY 1926; (3) Ruany.

viii. James L (21): born 14 AUG 1835. Married Ellen Ouderkirk, daughter of Orsen Ouderkirk and Phebe. Died 15 JAN 1904 in Richland, NY

ix.   Mary: born 1837 in Ellisburg, NY. She married James C. Webb in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY. They had a daughter Myra.

x.    Milton D: born 1839 in Ellisburg, NY.

xi.   Sarah: born in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY. She married Meloice Clark in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY. Children: Rosetta, Nettie and Delos.

Fourth Generation

8. James P. Shoecraft: born 17 AUG 1827 in Penfield, Monroe Co, NY.  James was an auctioneer by trade.  Civil War Veteran who was a member of the Union Continentals "Guard of Honor over the remains of President Lincoln" at James Hall 27 APR 1865.  He married twice: (1) Elizabeth Louise Dickerson born 1831 in Lyons, NY the daughter of Mary L. (Griswold) and Herman Graves Dickerson. Married October 7, 1852 Lyons NY. She died 29 JAN 1866 Buffalo NY at 34 years of age and buried at Lyons Rural Cemetery. (2) Catherine Armour Provoost Gillet born 22 NOV 1830 the daughter of May (Kelly) and James Provoost. Married 16 FEB 1869 in Buffalo, NY. She died 21 MAR 1901 Pontiac, MI at 70 years of age and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. James drowned in the Niagara River August 1880 at 53 years of age. He is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Rochester.

9. Barnabus Shoecraft: born 12 MAY 1818 in Monroe Co., NY. Married Maria Fish 11 JAN 1844. Farmer by trade, Lot 73, Sec 2. Barnabus died 06 JAN 1895 at 77 years of age. Buried in Oakgrove Cemetery, Coldwater, MI.

Maria was born 07 FEB 1827 and died 28 SEP 1900 at 72 years of age.

Children:

i.    Ezra Fish: born 30 OCT 1845 and married twice. (1) Hattie A Noyes 05 JUL 1869 at Coldwater, MI. (2) Flora Tufts who had a daughter Florence Swenson (DAR #414523).  Ezra died 08 OCT 1921 at 75 years of age.

ii.   Charles H: Married Mary A Noyes 20 FEB 1870. Charles died in 1881.

iii.  Elizabeth: Had two children: Bessie and Howard.

iv.   John B.(23): married Elizabeth Imber 24 DEC 1879 in Branch County, Michigan.

v.    Laura Maria: married Alfred James Colvin 23 NOV 1870.

 

10. Peter Shoecraft: born 20 SEP 1815. He married Caroline Francis Nye. Peter died 21 SEP 1863 at 48 years of age.

i.    Milton Nye (24): born 19 SEP 1839. Married his first cousin Delinah Miles. Milton died in 1915.

ii.   William: born 27 OCT 1834. Married Susan Webb 28 DEC 1853. She was born 16 JUL 1834 and died 01 FEB 1921.

 

11. Daniel Shoecraft: born 20 JAN 1817. Boylston, NY Town official as the Supervisor from 1846-48.

Children:

i.    Francis Mary: married Mr. Dockendorf.

iii.  Judson: married Jessie Smale.

 

12. Henry Shoecraft: born 26 APR 1822 in Herkimer Co., and married Sarah W. Streeter of Dekalb, NY.  He was a member of the Methodist Protestant church of North Boylston.  He bought the large Shoecraft house at top of Shoecraft Hill.  There were 2 houses, one very large on the East side of the road where Joseph originally lived and another on West side where Matthew originally lived. The remains of both houses are still there but hardly visible through regrown forest. From North Boyleston corners, if you drive south uphill till you come to the top of the first rise, then the road levels out for a short while.  Continue to the second rise, after the top of this rise go about 300 feet further. Shoecraft's owned all land on top of hill most of the way to Boyleston. They had about 100 head of cows between both farms and had a cheese factory (owned by Merton). Forest is now part of Winona State Forest. Lots of ski trails and the Town of Boyleston holds cross-country races there in the winter.  Henry died 28 JAN 1922 at 99 years of age. He and his wife are buried in N. Boyleston Cemetery.

Sarah was born 07 DEC 1823 in St. Lawrence County, NY.  Sarah died 19 MAR 1896 at 72 years of age.

i.    Judson (26): Married Emma Keaney and had two children Merton E. and Jessie J.

ii.   Josephine: born 17 JAN 1851 and died 06 MAR 1862 at 11 years of age.

iii.  Allie: married Mr. Lowrey of Lorraine, NY.

iv.   Merwin (27): born 18 JUL 1857 in Boyleston, NY. and married Cora Finster.

v.    Lottie: Married Mr. Bettinger of Auburn, NY.

vi.   Jesse: born in 1878.  A hunchback.  A school teacher in Sandy Creek.  Jesse died in 1937.

vii.  Clayton: Born in Brockton, Canada.  Well liked, handy and inventive making a lathe and band saw.  Described as a hermit that lived with his brother Merton.  He was a dead shot with a rifle and pistol.  Clayton left town for Alberta, Canada after he was blamed for the pregnancy of the neighbors two daughters.  Died in Clearwater National Forest of the Bitterroots in 1910.

15. William Shoecraft: born 27 OCT 1834 in Boyleston, Oswego Co., NY. Married Susan Webb, daughter of Charles Webb, 27 DEC 1853 in Oswego County, NY. William was educated in the common schools of his native town. He settled in Burlingame Township, Kansas in 1872 with a farm of 160 acres. Section 18, P. O. Carbondale. Mr. and Mrs. Shoecraft were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

i.    Lanie Marie: born 11 NOV 1854 in Oswega, NY. Died 27 JUN 1880.

ii.   Hattie L.: born 19 MAY 1859. She married Orison Miller.

iii.  William H.

iv.   Ella Gertrude: born 09 APR 1856 in Oswega, NY.

v.    Evalena Jane: born 24 AUG 1865 in Prescot, Ontario.

vi.   Henrietta L.: born 02 MAR 1873 in Oswega, NY. She married Dell V. Kimble. Died 12 JUL 1917.

 

16. Simon Shoecraft: born 22 SEP 1836 in Oswego County, NY. Married Jurusha Carter McIntosh 22 DEC 1865 in Vernon, NY. Simon was educated in NY county schools until age 14. Graduated from Cazenova Seminary in 1858. First employed as a teacher for 1 year in Dewitt, IA. Graduated from Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA in 1862. Principal of Clinton (Iowa) public schools from 1862-1866. He ran an extensive and prosperous business "S. Shoecraft & Son Co.", which was successful for 55 years as a wholesale dealer in lumber, coal and flour. His property included a 1000-acre cattle ranch in Jackson County limit. Moved inside Clinton at 539 fifth avenue. Prominent First Methodist Episcopal church board of trustee. Assisted in the building of Bowman M.E. church and then served as superintendent of the Sunday school program. President of Merchants National Bank. Simon died Tuesday evening 10 DEC 1912 in Clinton, Iowa at 76 years of age and buried in Springdale cemetery, Clinton, IA.

Jurusha Carter McIntosh: nicknamed “Jutie” was born 25 AUG 1838 in Marlborough, Connecticut. She was the youngest daughter of Lucius Walcott McIntosh who was born in East Windsor 11 AUG 1811. Her father was a prominent doctor and twice a member of Connecticut Legislature. He died 18 OCT 1884 and was buried in Vernon, NY. Her father married Eunice Gilbert of Marlborough 06 APR 1836. Jutie was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR # 10009).  She was born 30 MAY 1817 and died 12 APR 1869 in Vernon, NY.  Jutie died 10 JAN 1920 at 82 years of age in Orlando, FL and was buried in Springdale Cemetery, Clinton IA.

Children:

i.    Lucius McIntosh (28): born 26 MAR 1869 and died 12 MAR 1911 at 42 years of age.

ii.   Letitia: born 26 OCT 1875 in Clinton. Nickname "Lettie".  Educated in Clinton public schools, graduate of Clinton High. She attended college at Lake Forest academy.  Member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR #7120).  Lettie died Wednesday 03 JAN 1951 at 75 years of age. Services were held in the family home in Clinton Saturday 06 JAN 1951. Letitia was buried in Springdale cemetery, Clinton, IA.

 

17. Joseph M. Shoecraft: was born in 1817 in Frankfort, Herkimer Co., NY.  He Married Margaret Schneider in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co., NY 28 OCT 1840.  Joeseph died 13 OCT 1880 in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., NY at 63 years of age and is buried in N. Boyleston Cemetery.

Margaret Schnieder was born in 1820 and died in 1896 at 75 years of age. She is buried in N. Boyleston Cemetery.

18. Nickolas Shoecraft: born in Frankfort, Herkimer Co. NY 03 AUG 1820, moved to Chicago and believed to have died between 1889-1891.  He married three times: (1) Susan Snyder, born 1823 and died in 1847 at 24 years of age; (2) Mary Jane Tappen; and (3) Mary Susan Ingles in Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo, MI 14 JAN 1869, she died 25 APR 1905 in Niles, MI.

i.    Jacob N: born 18 AUG 1845 in Marcellus, MI.  Married Nancy Viola Norton.  Nancy was born in 1856 and died in 1928. They had 6 children: (1) Lula Mary born JUL 1879 in Scotts, MI and died in 1961; (2) Lena Maud (1881); (3) Sidney May (1882-1889); (4) Ethel Hattie born 22 NOV 1884 in Michigan married Walter Elwin Crippen @1900 five children born in Iowa - moved to Canada in 1910; (5) Leon William (11 OCT 1887 - 26 APR 1967) Married Emily Rose Patton 11 DEC 1911 and had nine children; (6) Myrtle Viola born 19 DEC 1891 in Knigsley, IA and died 17 JAN 1971. Jacob died 12 MAY 1930 in Raymond, SD.

19. Jacob Shoecraft: born 14 FEB 1819 in Frankfort, Herkimer Co., NY. Married 05 OCT 1844 to Deborah Dingman in N. Boyleston. He remained at home until 25 years old. He was employed at a distillery in Woodville, Jefferson Co. and subsequently engaged in business in Boylston. He then hired a farm in Ellisburg, which he purchased in 1854 after 6 years. Jacob and his sons are mentioned in the 1890 Business directory of Jefferson Co.

Deborah (Dingman) was born in 1826 at Boylston, NY.

21. James L. Shoecraft: born 14 AUG 1835 in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY. Married Ellen A. Ouderkirk in N. Boyleston, Oswego Co. NY in 1862. James died 15 JAN 1904 in Richland, Oswego Co. NY at 68 years of age. His death certificate states he was buried in Boyleston, NY.

i.    George Byron (32): born in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co. NY 1863. He married Emma J. George. He died 12 DEC 1937 in Sloansville, Schoharie Co. NY at 74 years of age.

ii.   Hattie: born in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co. NY 1864. Hattie died before 1870 in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co. NY

iii.  Amelia Lettie: born in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co. NY 1868. She married William Douglas. Amelia's nickname was "Lettie". They had five Children: Hazel, Lincoln, John, Bernard and Kenneth.

v.    Fredrick Irvine: born 31 JAN 1877 in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co. NY. Married twice: (1) Mary Louisa Knight in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada 18 OCT 1905, Mary was born in Newcastle, Durham Ontario, Canada 03 NOV 1889 and was the daughter of William Knight and Angeline Trimm; (2) Ester Prescott, married in Grenville, Ontario, Canada 1922. He was a member of the 9th Infrantry and participated in the assault of San Jian Hill during the Spanish American war, the Phillipine insurrection in 1900 and the Chinese Boxer rebellion where he was injured. He went AWOL shortly thereafter and went to Canada. He was a member of the Canadian army during World War I. Fredrick died 08 MAY 1926 in Prescott, Grenville, Ontario, Canada at 49 years of age.

22. James J. Shoecraft born 22 JUL 1853 and married Jessie B. May on 04 JUL 1875. James died 12 MAR 1920 at 67 years of age.

i.    James Rex: was born in 1882 in Coldwater, MI. Spanish American War veteran.  Mayor of Pinellas Park, FL. Married Elva Mae Badger from Seneca Co., Ohio. Her father was Charles Freemont Badger and her mother was Flora A. Saylor. They had one daughter Flora Elizabeth who died in 1925 at the age of 20.  During the Spanish American War, he came to Florida with troops and was stationed at Tampa. The troops were to be forwarded to Cuba. The transport he was on was rammed before it could get out of Tampa Bay. He sat out the rest of the war in Hillsborough. In 1911, after the war, he left Toledo, Ohio and went back to Florida -- he was sent there by the DuPont Company. He had lots to do with the development of Pinellas Park, Florida. He was mayor/commissioner for thirty five years. SHOECRAFT PARK was named for him on February 11, 1965. He was a lifelong Republican. Possibly his greatest achievement was the construction of the dam at Seminole Lake. He was a " man of integrity and was a natural leader". James had been either commissioner or mayor since 1914 until he died in 1954. Shoecraft Park was dedicated in his honor. James died April 14, 1954

ii.   Ruth: married Patrick John McDevitt in 1928 in Pinellas Park, FL. She died at age 81 on May 27 1976 in Hollywood, CA. She worked in movies, on Broadway and on TV. She used the name Ruth Thane McDevitt.  On Broadway, she played in "The Solid Gold Cadillac", "Harvey" and played the lead in "Arsenic and Old Lace". She played many parts as an actress: She was one of the most popular 'Little Old Lady' actresses in all of show business. Ruth McDevitt was born Ruth Thane Shoecraft in Cold Water, Michigan on September 13, 1895. She appeared in nearly every branch of the entertainment media starting on stage and then radio, graduating to the movies and then TV. She was perfect for the LOL roles with her sweet demeanor, silver-white hair and warbly little voice. Among the films in which she appeared were: "The Parent Trap"; "Boys Night Out"; "The Birds"; "Dear Heart" and "The Out of Towners." On TV she was a regular on "Pistols n' Petticoats" as Grandma; "Kolchak: the Night Stalker" as Emily Cowles and "Mr. Peepers" as Mom Peepers. 

 

24. Milton Nye Shoecraft: born 19 SEP 1839 in NY. Married Delainah Miles, his first cousin. Milton died 20 AUG 1915 at 75 years of age, killed by a train. He was a bookkeeper for Strong Brothers in St. Joseph, Missouri. He then moved to the following areas in Kansas: Topeka 25 MAY 1897, Eskridge 09 Nov 1902 and then to Emporia July of 1904.

Delainah Miles was born 11 JUN 1847 in NY. She was the daughter of Martha Shoecraft (born 25 MAR 1825). Delainah's nickname was "Lanie".

Cora was born 29 MAR 1858 in Orwell, NY.  She died 04 OCT 1935 at 77 years of age and buried in Auburn, NY.

28. Lucius McIntosh Shoecraft: born 26 MAR 1869 in Clinton, IA. Married Mary Jane Burchell 14 JUN 1899. He was a member of Cornell College, IA. Lucius died 12 MAR 1911 in Pensacola, FL at 42 years of age and buried in Springdale Cemetery, Clinton, IA.

Mary Jane Burchell was born 25 NOV 1875 in Erie, Illinois. Her nickname was "Mamie". Mary Jane's parents were Robert Lucket Burchell and Margaret Victoria Jones, who were married 18 NOV 1866 in NY. Margaret was born 18 NOV 1847. Her parents were Augustas and Mary Jones. Robert Burchell, Mary Jane's father, was well established: Business owner, Erie Postmaster, Village and school Treasurer, and President of the National Bank of Erie. Mary Jane moved back to Erie after the death of her husband in 1911, taking her son with her. Mary Jane died 21 AUG 1961 in Moline, Illinois at 86 years of age and was buried in Springdale Cemetery, Clinton, IA.

29. Matthew L. Shoecraft: born 05 OCT 1841. Married Mercy Webb 21 SEP 1862. She was born 14 OCT 1844 and died 10 AUG 1919. Matthew died 24 DEC 1915 at 73 years of age.

33. Willis Albert Shoecraft: born in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co. NY 1870. He married Rose Belle Austin (1872-1933) in Annsville, Oneida Co., NY in 1897. Willis died 20 JAN 1937 in Manlius, Onondaga, NY at 66 years of age.

Rose lived at 279 N. Midler St 5th Ward for 30 years; female, white, she was born March 27 1872, died at age 60 yrs 1 mo 17 days.  She was a homemaker, born in Taberg NY; Her father was Henry Austin born US; mother Rosella Clover born US; Rose was buried in Manlius cemetery May 16 1932 and died May 14 1932.  She died from chronic nephrisis, contributory causes erythema multifosia and uressia; disease contracted at home; lab tests krisealysics, blood counts and other blood work; by Laurence H Strug MD

Zilpha was born 10 JAN 1884 and died 02 JUN 1963 in Dallas, Texas.

35. Emerson Strong Shoecraft: born 17 MAR 1873 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He married Ella Sarah Rendell born 29 OCT 1888 in Carbon Dale, Kansas. She died 1990 in Globe, AZ. Emerson died 22 OCT 1947 in Globe, AZ. at 77 years of age.

i.    Kathryn Georgia: born 22 FEB 1911 at Overbrook, Kansas. Married on 14 SEP 1938 to Howard R. Davis who was born 08 APR 1911. They moved to Los Angeles and had two Children: Stanley Richard born 14 SEP 1939 and Nancy Ellen born 15 JUN 1945.

36. Merton E.: born 03 AUG 1868 in Boylston, NY. Married Ada L. McDougal 21 DEC 1892 by Rev. Lewig Chase. He made cheese for 33 years, retiring in 1927. Civic duties included: Republican Town Committeeman, Methodist Church Finance Committee and President of the J. B. Hammond Brotherhood. Merton died 27 APR 1949 at 80 years of age and is buried in Wesleyan cemetery.

Ada was born in 1873 the daughter of William and Nancy (DeLong) McDougal in Boylston. Ada died 15 MAY 1942.

i.    Ida: She married Mr. Smith.  She had two sons Merton & Loyd. Ida died 27 JUL 1963

ii.   Schuyler L.: born 07 FEB 1907 in Lacona, NY.  He was a graduate of Sandy Creek High school. He was a mechanic by trade and worked for a lumber company in Arlington, VT. He married Alice A. Haley 19 JUN 1937. He bought and operated Shoecraft's garage. Served in World War II JUN 1942 to OCT 1945 with the 605th anti-aircraft battalion in Europe and achieved the rank of sergeant-technical. Alice retired from teaching in the Watertown school district. He was a member of Asbury Methodist Church and board of trustee. Served as Chief of the Lacona fire department. Schuyler died 30 JUN 1964.

 

37. Raymond Shoecraft: born 07 FEB 1882 in Boyleston, NY.  He married Clara Hastrich 20 JUL 1907 in Lancaster, NY. Raymond died 29 DEC 1927 in Buffalo, NY at 45 years of age.

Clara Hastrich was born 21 APR 1885 in Lancaster, NY.  She died 20 FEB 1973 at 87 years of age in Buffalo, NY.
