SANTA CRUZ AREA INFORMATION

  • Start and Finish: This brevet begins at the Santa Cruz Lighthouse & Surfing Museum on West Cliff Drive. If driving from the Bay Area on Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz, go north on Hwy 1 toward Half Moon Bay. When the freeway ends, this becomes Mission Street. Go west about one mile on Mission, then turn left at the stoplight onto Bay Street (just past the McDonald's restaurant.) Bay Street will end about a mile later at a "T" intersection. Go right, or west on West Cliff. About one mile from the intersection of Bay and West Cliff is the Lighthouse. Note that the brevet finish is at 226 West Avenue, 1.6 easy miles from the start. After the brevet, you can ride your bike back to the Lighthouse if you left a car parked there. (Or, park near the finish and ride to the start if you like. At Almar & Mission, quite near the finish, there is a 24-hour Safeway store as well as Westside Coffee for an early morning breakfast. There are also breakfast places open early on Ocean Street near Hwy 17.)

  • Parking: There are plenty of free parking spaces along West Cliff on the ocean side of the street. There is also parking in the residential areas inland from the coast. The spaces you'll see on West Cliff before reaching the Lighthouse get a lot of use by the early-morning surfing crowd, but those more to the north are usually empty. Most are normal street parking spaces available at all hours. However, those closest to the Lighthouse are in gated lots that are open only from 7 AM to 9 PM. If you think there is even the slightest chance you'll not be back to your car by 9 PM, don't use these lots. Park a little farther away in the regular parking spaces and ride your bike the short distance to the Lighthouse if need be.

  • Restrooms: Across the street from the Lighthouse are public restrooms, which open by 7 AM (if not before). In addition, there are many more public restrooms at various state parks and beaches along the route if you need an early morning pit stop.
