Call Spells in AD&D

Home

Call spells are all in the school of conjuration/summoning, and may be in other schools. You have to be a caller to use these - no other type of wizard can, including conjuration specialists. Note that most call spells take an amount of spell points to use other than the normal amount for a spell of their level; this is intended. The spell level itself is there for campaigns that don't use the spell point system, and to determine game effects that directly rely on the level of a spell. (Such as which of them can be cast in given rings of the Outlands, for example.) Spells with THAC0 values must make attack rolls; those that do not have THAC0s use saving throw charts instead, unless specified otherwise.

Imp

Chocobo

The chocobo appears and attacks one-three targets (caster's choice.) Damage is divided equally among the targets.

Choco/Moogle
Schools: Conjuration/Summoning, Enchantment, Air
Spell points: 10Spell level: 3rd
Casting time: 10Range: 10 yds (starting point)
The team (Moogle riding chocobo) appears and rides up to 40 yds straight in any one direction. All enemies within 5 ft either way of the chocobo are attacked. Note: Armor does not affect chance to hit, but each point of AC below 10 reduces the damage by 1, to a minimum of 1. They stop if they have hit 10 targets.

Each target that is hit is paralyzed. They are allowed a saving throw, with a +3 bonus and a penalty equal to 1/3 the caster's level, rounded mathematically.

Mist

Area of effect: Cone of radius 20 ft, length 12 + level yds.
The mist dragon appears and creates a cone of damaging mist. It is about 10 degrees colder than room temperature (but it's temperature has nothing to do with damage.)

Shiva
Schools: Conjuration/Summoning, Invocation, Water

Area of effect: Cylinder of radius 15 ft, length 25 + (2 * level) ft
Shiva appears and creates an effect similar to a cone of cold. Saving throw with a -2 penalty for half damage.

Ifrit
Schools: Conjuration/Summoning, Invocation, Fire
Spell points: 15Spell level: 4th

Area of effect: Sphere of radius (15 + level) ft
Ifrit appears and creates an effect similar to a fireball. Saving throw for half damage.

Ramuh
Schools: Conjuration/Summoning, Invocation, Air
Spell points: 16Spell level: 4th
Casting time: 1 rd.Range: 10 + level yds (start)
Area of effect: Each bolt is as long as 5 yards * the number of d8s of damage they carry.
Ramuh appears and creates several lightening bolts. The exact number is up to the caster, but can't exceed the caster's level, and can't be lower then 3.

The amount below is the total damage. The caster may assign as many damage dice as he wants to each bolt, but each bolt must carry at least 2d8 damage. The THAC0 below applies to creatures that are not wearing metal armor (any armor they do have, however, does not apply at all.) Creatures wearing armor with metal in it (at least as much as studded leather) are automatically hit.

Saving throw for half damage. People wearing chain mail or heavier metal armor recieve a -4 penalty.

Titan

Area of effect: Circle of radius 10 + (2 * level) yds
Titan appears and causes an earthquake. The caster may choose certain people within the area of effect when the spell goes off; they suffer less than the full effects (only 1/4 normal damage). Flying creatures suffer no damage as they do not touch the ground.

Saving throw for half damage. Increase damage by 1d6 for each size category smaller than medium, decrease by 1d6 for each size category greater than medium.

Leviathan
Schools: Conjuration/Summoning, Water
Spell points: 18Spell level: 4th
Casting time: 2 rds.Range: 15 + level yds
Area of effect: Rectangle, with sum of the length and width of which is at most 20 + level
Leviathan, a giant sea serpent, manifests and causes a large wave to crash down upon enemies within the rectangle. If used at sea, this spell is even more destructive because it has the potential to sunder enemy vessels. Saving throw with -2 penalty for half damage.
