When is the best time to plant?

Any time! As long as your plant material is properly installed and watered, there is no wrong time to plant. The common misconception is that the best planting time is in Spring only, but planting can be started in Spring continuing through Winter until the ground becomes too frozen to dig, as long as plant material is dug at the proper time.

When is the best time to prune plant material?
Generally, the best time to prune deciduous trees and shrubs is the Spring, right around the time they leaf out. This can help in achieving fullness of the plant and weeding out any dead branches that occurred from the Winter. Evergreens are best trimmed in June. For a more detailed pruning chart, please refer to Seasonal Pruning Guide.

Why are the trees/shrubs/ornamentals turning yellow at my site?
There are many reasons your plant material is turning yellow. The most common reason is the watering schedule. The first thing you should do is check your tree/shrub for under or over watering, both of which exhibit the same symptoms. Insert a stick or pole at least 2 -3 feet into the ground right near the base of the plant. If the pole is muddy or moist, wait a couple of weeks before watering again, if there has been no rain. If the pole is completely clean, water immediately, saturating the ground until no more water can be absorbed. For more information on watering, please refer to our Basic Watering Instructions.

Why are arborvitae/upright evergreens shedding and turning brown from the inside out?
This is a very natural occurrence as long as your evergreen is browning or shedding from the inside out. This is the way evergreens make room for new growth. Should the browning occur at the tips, another problem is at hand and should be diagnosed by a nursery professional.

Why do ornamental crabs have spots on the leaves? When is the best time to spray crabs, with what and how often?
Most ornamental crabs in our area are susceptible to a fungus called Apple Scab or Rust. This is what causes the black or brown spotting on the leaves. It is best to spray crabs every year with a systemic fungicide in the early Spring, with the first application at the pink bud stage. Two more applications are necessary at three week intervals. This will definitely improve and preserve the looks of the crab throughout the year. You can purchase fungicide at any local hardware or home improvement store. I have insects in the trees/shrubs/ ornamentals at my job site, what do I do? Deerpath Nurseries can help diagnose pest problems on any plants purchased from our nursery and will refer you to companies who specialize in pest management.
