The plant of the month for May is Prairiefire flowering crabapple.  There are hundreds of different varieties with different flowers, shapes, leaves, and colors, but we want to highlight the Prairiefire. Prairifire Crabapple has a rounded crown. New leaves emerge purple and turn reddish green as they mature. Flowers are a pinkish red color. The glossy dark red fruit are very vivid when reflecting sun. Fruit are 3/8 - 1/2" in diameter and are quite persistent. Bark is dark reddish-brown and attractive in winter. Requires full sun, tolerant to a fairly wide range of soil conditions.
