Child Labor Laws (29 U.S.C. §212)

Employers of minors are required to obtain appropriate forms for their employment, such as educational certificates or employment permits obtained by the minor from the school district.

Persons sixteen and seventeen years old can perform most types of work except that which has been determined in regulations issued by the U.S. Secretary of Labor to be hazardous. Generally, they may not work before 6:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m. Their total hours per day and week are also limited.
Generally, persons under sixteen years old may not work in manufacturing, mining or processing operations and may not work during school hours. They may not work before 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. Their total hours per day and week are also limited.

Generally, persons fourteen and fifteen years old may work in retail, food service and gasoline service establishments.
Children at least thirteen years old may work in "street trades."

Children at least nine years old may work in the sale or delivery of newspapers.
