Presentations

I have shared my expertise by giving these presentations to technical communicators from Toronto to Honolulu at over 103 STC conference sessions, leadership workshops, and individual chapter meetings.

I enjoy helping others to learn and to grow, so giving presentations is one of my favorite things to do in STC. Under Articles, there is an article on many of these same topics.

If you want to view one of my slide presentations, please send me an email message, and I'll send it to you, because the PowerPoint presentations take up too much room to post all of them on this site.

Summary of Presentation

Achieving It
All!

An observation can be made about success—everybody talks about it, but far too few do anything definite to ensure their own personal success. To be successful, you must know how to set and achieve goals, build a personal success plan, and develop self-motivation. Tapping into your unlimited potential allows you to progress, grow, and change.
During this one-hour presentation I discuss five success essentials to use when formulating and testing goals.

The Art of Friendly Persuasion Are you successful at persuading others to think as you do? Successful influencing means getting a result that meets the legitimate needs of both sides. Being able to effectively persuade or influence the thinking of others is a powerful skill that every professional must learn.

Building
Successful Teams

The team concept has traditionally been very important in most organizations. The information in this presentation is equally important when you are on the job as it is when you participate in an STC committee or office. You frequently hear the expressions “teamwork” and “being a team player.” Yet despite the wide-spread talk about team effort, it’s probably true that most people have not actually had a true team experience. People can work in the same department for years, serve on committees, meet in management groups regularly, and still not be a part of a team.

Delegating for Results

This presentation discusses the benefits of delegation and how to overcome common barriers. Delegation is the effective use of human resources. You must know when to back away from competent people and when to intervene if things start to go wrong. In this presentation I share tips that can be used whether you are leading a chapter, a committee, a team, or a department. If you are not delegating properly, you are making your own life more difficult. In turn, your subordinates suffer because their interests and talents are being overlooked, however unintentionally.

Developing Commitment
and Motivation

Developing a stronger commitment and the motivation to do more allows you to become more valuable in the marketplace and on a team. Have you ever wondered how to help yourself and others build the commitment and motivation needed for a particular project? Successful managers know that they must understand what people want to get from their work before they can help them build these important traits.

It's A Jungle
Out There!

Change has been a part of our lives since birth. It is that way for all of us. We are what we are because we have gone through—and survived—all kinds of change. That change affects our lives in many ways, and our reaction to that change can make or break us!

Leadership Challenge:
Building for
the Future

A four-hour leadership workshop.

Mentoring—A Gentle Alliance
Mentors. Role models. Idols. Call them what you like—chances are very good that one of them has impacted your life with such tremendous force the reverberations of that influence affect the decisions you make to this day. During this one-hour presentation, I discuss the mentoring relationship, which has been called the “pinnacle of work relationships,” and seven specific behaviors that mentors should practice to be more successful.

Presenting Like A Pro!

Your ability to construct and deliver a powerful presentation is one of the most important facets of your career—without that ability, you may never be able to sell your ideas, your projects, and yourself. During this one-hour presentation, I discuss six important principles for building an effective presentation and an effective 8-step process that allows you to develop a presentation that anyone would be proud to deliver.

Providing Value Through STC

A presentation that reveals how we can add value to our careers by participating in STC activities.

Revealing Your Hidden Value

Have you ever felt as though technical communicators don’t get the proper respect and credit for the work we do? One way we can stop worrying and get more respect as well, is to take an active role in showing the value we add. During this one-hour presentation, I discuss ways to demonstrate the value we add, how to measure that value, and add even more value.

Trends in Technical Communication

A presentation that relays the predictions of six Society leaders who predict what the future holds for those in the diverse profession of technical communication.
