UNITY THROUGH POLARITY November 23,
1998
YIN AND
YANG
In the simplest terms of
classical physics, atoms of material objects are held together by a polarized
force composed of equal and opposite electrical charges called protons and
electrons. Each atom is thereby unified and stabilized. This is one of nature's
manifestations of a great fundamental principle of the universe: Unity through
polarity.

The white half of the circle
represents the Yang force; the black half represents the Yin force. Note that
although they are equal and opposite, they are bound together as one. They do
not - and cannot - exist independently of one each other. If they were separate
the symbol would not be Complete, and the circle would have no
Balance.
The yin/yang symbol was
designed to describe the inter-relatedness of all creation in the natural
world. The circle taken as a whole shows us how two opposing but complementary
forces can create a balanced state, or oneness.
We experience manifestations
of Yin and Yang forces in some form on every level of our life experience. All
dimensions of life have some expression of this reciprocal relationship that
helps to create balance and harmony. Perhaps the most obvious manifestation of
Yin and Yang in action is Change. The motion of these two forces in the
natural world is seen quite clearly in rhythms of change such as day and night,
the ebb and flow of the tides, and the changing of seasons. Awareness of
opposite forces in life challenges your preconceived way of being in
relationship to gravity, your physical self, your mind, and with other people.
You have the opportunity to look at decisions previously made on all levels,
and reevaluate these choices presently, and in the future. This, of course, is
Growth.
A natural law associated with
the cycle of change is unending progress. The whole purpose of change, and the
continuous cycles of Yin and Yang is to take you higher, to allow you to grow,
and give you more of what will lead you to a truer expression of your real
self.
The following list of
qualities and concepts manifested by Yin and Yang are some examples for you to
examine. I have arranged it so that the more obvious relationships are near the
top. As you read down the list, notice how the concepts become larger. The
philosophy of Yin and Yang is that these forces are not only in operation in
our material world, but also emotionally, socially, mentally, and
spiritually.
