Sonny Putter was first elected to the Newcastle City Council in 1994, and was re-elected in 1995 and in 1999. He was elected Mayor for a two-year term in 2000. He had been a Commissioner of King County Fire District No. 25, which previously served the Newcastle area. In 1993, he was instrumental in coordinating the campaign to incorporate the City of Newcastle. Sonny has been active in local and regional affairs for the past nine
years. He is one of Newcastle's two representatives to the Eastside
Transportation Partnership, of which he was formerly Vice Chair. He is
also Newcastle's representative on the I-405 Corridor Program Executive
Committee. In 2002 and 2003, Sonny was elected by his peers in other
cities to serve as At the State level, Sonny serves on the Legislative Committee of the Association of Washington Cities. He also earned accreditation as a Certified Municipal Leader from the Association. Sonny is a founding board member of the Greater Newcastle Chamber of Commerce. He has been an officer and board member of several local charitable organizations. Professionally, Sonny is a Certified Public Accountant and an owner of Friedman, Putter and Company, an Investment Advisory firm registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Sonny Putter is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound with a Master of Business Administration degree. He also graduated from McGill University with a Master of Science (Applied) degree. Sonny was the recipient of the Elijah Watt Sells National Accounting Award and the Jack and Charlotte Spitzer Young Leadership Award. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society, a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and a Fellow of the Geological Society of Canada. Sonny Putter has been married for the past 31 years to the former Ann Marie Lemchen. They are the parents of one son, Jonathan.
