Judy's Logic Problems

August's Young People's LP#1 - Visiting Italy

This summer, five young college students visited Italy over the summer. Each student spent some time in Rome where they visited several different places. Mostly, the group stayed together, but on one day, each went off on his or her own to visit one particular place not visited by the other four. Before leaving Italy for home, each student spent a week in a different city in Italy - Florence, Milan, Naples, L’Aquila, and Venice. From the clues, determine each student’s first name, last name, place visited while in Rome, and the city in Italy where each spent a week of his or her vacation.

1. Cody, who strangely enough was the only student to visit the famous Colosseum while in Rome, spent a week in Naples.

2. Bridget (whose surname is neither Moore nor Hershberger) visited the Arch of Constantine while in Rome.

3. Annalee had always wanted to visit L’Aquila and used up at least three rolls of film getting snapshots while there.

4. While in Rome, the student surnamed Durham (who is not Dennis) visited the Baths of Caracalla, while the student surnamed Moore visited St. Peter’s Basilica.

5. Erica Treigo was especially excited about the trip to Italy as it had been the first time she had ever travelled anywhere, except within a few miles of her hometown.

6. The student who made a visit to the Aurelian Wall while in Rome, spent a week in Venice.

7. Florence wasn’t the city in Italy visited by the student surnamed Griffin.

August's Young People's LP#2 - Laid Up

Ten-year old Billy was laid up over the weekend from a sprained ankle. Between reading and various other things, Billy ended up watching TV for two consecutive hours on Friday evening, two consecutive hours on Saturday morning, two consecutive hours on Saturday afternoon, and two consecutive hours on Sunday afternoon.

He decided that he’d watch a show on The Learning Channel (one was on deep sea diving, one was on dogsledding, one was on hot air balloons, and one was on mountain climbing) during one two-hour period each day, and one show on the Animal Planet channel (one was about bears, one was about cheetahs, one was about elephants, and one was about whales) during one two-hour each day. Billy believed in being entertained along with being educated! From the clues, determine the subject of each show Bill watched on each channel during the two-hours period on each of the specified times and days.

1. During one two-hour period, Billy watched the show on mountain climbing on The Learning Channel. He had watched the show about bears sometime before watching the show on mountain climbing, and the show about cheetahs sometime after watching the show on mountain climbing.

2. Billy did not watch the show on elephants during the during the afternoon.

3. Saturday, during one two-hour period, Billy watched the show on deep sea diving.

4. The show about hot air balloons was not watched by Billy during the same two-hour time period that he watched the show on bears.

5. The show about mountain climbing was nor aired on the same day as the day Animal Planet aired the show about whales.

August's Young People's LP#3 - Hospital Employee's Day Off

Five employees at the Hazleton City Memorial Hospital each have a different day off each week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday) and each employee works in a different area of the hospital - Emergency Room, Laboratory, Physical Therapy, Surgery, or X-ray. Can you determine each employee’s first and last name (surnames are Chan, Murphy, Sanchez, Stavich, and Reynolds), the hospital area where each employee works, and the day off each employee has each week? Note: the work week starts on Monday each week.

1. Exactly two employees have a day off which begins with the same initial as his or her last name, but no employee has a day off which begins with the same initial as his or her first name.

2. Exactly one employee has the same first and last name initials.

3. Either Scott or Marvin works in the Emergency Room.

4. The employee surnamed Stavich (who doesn’t have Saturday off) has a day off later in the week than the employee who works in X-ray, who in turn has a day off later in the week than Teresa.

5. Rhonda’s day off is later in the week than the employee surnamed Chan, but earlier in the week than Marvin’s day off.

6. The person surnamed Stavich is not the person who works in Surgery.

7. Candie’s day off is two days after the individual who works in X-ray, but earlier in the week than the individual who works in Physical Therapy.
