December's Young People's LP#1 - Visiting Oceanic Parks

Four Midwest residents had a chance to visit one of four different marine parks this summer - in June, July, August, or September. Each park had a marine exhibit where one could to learn about different sea animals (dolphins, killer whales, porpoises, or seals) and enjoy watching them do tricks. From the clues, determine each person’s first name, the month each individual visited each park, one of which is the Deep Sea Marine Park, and the type of animal they enjoyed watching there.

1. In three consecutive months, park visitors were Toby, the person who visited the Seaview Oceanic Park, and the person who enjoyed watching the dolphins perform.

2. Raoul, who thoroughly enjoyed watching the seals do tricks, didn’t visit the Oceania Water Park.

3. Mike visited a marine park in July.

4. Willard and the person watched the porpoise perform visited the Seven Seas Park and the Seaview Oceanic Park, in some order.

December's Young People's LP#2 - Decisions, Decisions

Thomas Skinner was an honor student throughout high school and worked after school and on weekends at area fast food establishments. During the summers he worked for his father, who was a veterinarian. He was everything a parent could be proud of - except that Thomas was never exactly sure where he was headed after graduating. Before entering each grade in high school (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior), he announced that he wanted to be an airline pilot, an archaeologist, a computer programmer, or a dentist, in some order. However, upon graduation, he announced that he really wanted to be a veterinarian like his Dad, and off to college he went. Following college, Thomas joined his father in his practice, and eventually took it over! From the clues, determine what it was that Thomas wanted to be as he entered each grade in high school, and where he worked in the evenings and weekends during each year.

1. Just as Thomas entered his Junior year at high school, he announced he wanted to be an archaeologist.

2. Thomas worked at Fish-N-More the year just after he had thought he’d like to go into dentistry.

3. When Thomas entered his senior year, he neither thought he’d like to be an airline pilot nor did he work at the Taco de Casa.

4. Thomas worked at the Pizza Palace the year just prior to the year he worked at the Sub Marine Deli.

December's Young People's LP#3 - Musically Inclined

Between the four Mendlesohn children, they play eight different instruments - two percussion, two reed, two string, and two wind. From the information given, determine the two instruments played by each child (two of whom are boys - Percival and Pomeroy, and two of whom are girls - Priscilla and Prunella. Note: the two percussion instruments are the drums and piano; the two reed instruments are the oboe and saxophone; the two string instruments are the guitar and the violin; and, the two wind instruments are the flute and the trumpet.

1. No child plays two musical instruments in the same family of instruments.

2. Priscilla plays the guitar and also an instrument which is of the same family of musical instruments played by her brother, Pomeroy.

3. The oldest boy plays the piano, but not the saxophone.

4. Percival plays one of the wind instruments - the flute.

5. One of the instruments played by Pomeroy comes from the same family of musical instruments played by his sister, Prunella (who doesn’t play the drums).

December's Young People's LP#4 - Where Are the Mermaids

Are mermaids just legends? Fantasy? Well, it is hard to say, but over the years, researchers have found logged into journals of five famous (or is it infamous!) pirates, the sightings of mermaids. Each pirate had been sailing on a different ocean (Antarctic, Atlantic, Arctic, Indian, or Pacific) when he sighted a mermaid (Cassandra, Jasmine, Miriam, Panphilia, or Sabrina), who it appeared conversed with each pirate, giving each her name! Each mermaid had a different color of hair - auburn, black, blonde, brown, or red, according to the journals. Even though the pirates involved in these spottings had bad reputations, it appeared that afterwards they turned their thoughts to good deeds and no longer plundered and stole, but strove to keep the oceans safe!

From the clues, determine the ocean where each pirate, including Baldemore the Bad, met each mermaid and the name of each mermaid and the color of her hair.

1. According to his journals, Captain Romulus was sailing on the Antarctic Ocean when he had the pleasure of meeting a lovely mermaid, whose name wasn’t Miriam.

2. It wasn’t Rudledge the Ruthless who spotted the mermaid in the Atlantic Ocean (who wasn’t the mermaid with the brown hair).

3. Either Captain Shook or Wolfgang the Weird sailed on the Indian Ocean where the mermaid Panphilia was encountered. Panphilia isn’t the mermaid with the brown hair.

4. The mermaid Sabrina is recorded as having blonde hair, while Miriam had either black or brown hair.

5. Rudledge the Ruthless recorded in his journals the name of the mermaid he met as Jasmine.

6. Captain Shook (who didn’t encounter Miriam) met the mermaid with the auburn hair while sailing on either the Antarctic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean.
