July's Young People's LP#1 - A Fine Day

Recently, Diana Bouke and her sister, Crystal, and three brothers - Aaron, Jon, and Ryan, returned overdue to books to the library. Each book, including Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty, was a different number of days over due (3, 4, 6, 7, or 8), so each paid a different fine at five cents a day for an overdue book. From the clues, determine the first name of each child, the name of the book each returned, and the number of days each book was overdue.

1. The five children are Jon, Ryan, the child who was returning May Louisa Alcott’s Little Women, the child whose book was four days past due, and the child who paid a total of 40¢ in fines.

2. The three oldest children are Aaron, the child who returned Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, and the child whose book was seven days past due.

3. The two youngest Bouke’s children are Ryan and the child whose book was six days past due.

4. Crystal and the child who was returning Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn are the child whose book was three days past due, and the child whose book was six days past due, in some order.

July's Young People's LP#2 - The Song Writers

Five high school friends who play in a band have written several of their own songs. Last month, each entered one of five of their songs in a contest that a Hollywood record company was holding, and lo and behold, all five won a different cash - either $200, $250, $300, $350, or $400! Because the writing of each song was a group effort, after receiving their prize money, they pooled the money and split it evenly between them. From the clues, determine each band member’s name (one is Billy Boles), the name of the song each entered into the contest (one was One Cloudy Day), and the amount of prize money each won.

1. Darla Davis won the same amount of money that everyone ended up with after pooling all the prize money and splitting it evenly five ways.

2. Eddie Ellis is the band member who sent in the song The Old Fishin’ Hole.

3. The band member who sent in the song Silver Rain ended up with $100 more, after the prize money had been split, than the amount of the check he or she received from the recording company.

4. Amber Arkin, who is not the individual who entered the song When a Robin Sings, received a total of $350 in prize money.

5. The largest prize winner wasn’t Casey Cain (who entered the song they called Moondrops.

July's Young People's LP#3 - Slaying the Dragon

Once upon a time there were five knights, each of whom had his own castle in the north of Englandia. Each knight, including Gasper, had found his true love when he saved the beautiful maiden from a fierce dragon, each of which was a different color - blue, green, purple, red, or yellow. After slaying the dragon and rescuing the damsel in distress (one of whom was Philomena), each knight took his new found love to his castle where they married and lived happily ever after. From the clues determine then name of each knight, the name of each maiden, the color of each dragon, and the name of each knight’s castle (one was Isenbury Castle).

1. Clagmore Castle is not the home of the knight who slew the yellow dragon.

2. The knight who slew the purple dragon (who was not Aldrich) rode off with his true love to Eldridge Castle which they called home for the rest of their lives.

3. Cassandra lived happily at Castle Hopewell with her knight after being rescued from the ferocious green dragon.

4. Jotham and the knight who saved the damsel named Desdemona (neither of whom had any contact with the purple dragon) are the knight who slew the green dragon and the knight whose castle is called Castle Northtrope, in some order.

5. The beautiful Rowena was saved by a handsome, dashing knight from the grasp of the horrid red dragon.

July's Young People's LP#4 - Precious Cargo

By the year 2500, four inhabitable planets had been found in the Andromeda galaxy. On each of the four planets (one of which is Morset), Earthlings had set up a large colony, one of which is called Eden. In a different year (2520, 2525, 2530, and 2535) a spaceship left Earth to travel to one of the distant planets carrying precious cargo needed by the inhabitants for continued survival. From the clues, determine the year each spaceship left Earth (one spaceship was Explorer IV), the planet that was each spaceships destination, and the name of the colony on each planet.

1. The spaceship whose destination was the colony Utopia left Earth sometime before the spaceship Magellan I left Earth, which was sometime before a spaceship left Earth heading for the planet, Xorbia.

2. The spaceship which was carrying precious cargo to the colony of Atlantis left Earth sometime before the spaceship on its way to the planet, Bronzia.

3. The planet Morset was not the destination of the spaceship which left Earth in 2525.

4. Freedom III took off from Earth in a year sometime before the year that the spaceship bound for the planet Loebter was launched.

5. The spaceship heading for the colony of Shangri-la left Earth exactly ten years before the Destiny II left Earth toward its destination.
