Judy's Logic Problems

July's Young People's LP#1 - Spring Yard Work

This past Saturday was a beautiful Spring day and Galen stayed busy most of the day working in the yard. He accomplished quite a bit - mowing the lawn, planting some vegetables, pruning some bushes, and weeding the flower beds! He started each job at a different time - 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m., While engaged in each chore, Galen received a call on his cell phone from a different person - his best friend, his mother, his son, and a co-worker. From the clues, determine the time that Galen started each chore and who called Galen while he was working each chore.

1. The chore Galen started at 11 a.m. was pruning some hedges around the property.

2. The call from Galen’s best friend who wanted to know if he wanted to go fishing came some time before the call from a co-worker about an upcoming barbecue.

3. Galen took a break for lunch from noon until 1 p.m. and it was after lunch he did some weeding in his flower beds.

4. While slaving away at the last chore that day, Galen received a call from his son letting him know that he and his wife were going to make Galen a grandfather in a few months.

5. Galen’s mother called sometime before Galen mowed the lawn.

6. While eating lunch, Galen made a couple of phone calls pertaining to the call he had received from his co-worker about the upcoming barbecue.

July's Young People's LP#2 - A Rainy Day

The Davis child and four other students were waiting in line to board the school bus at the end of the school day. It was a rainy day and each child either wore a raincoat or carried an umbrella. The students include three girls - Andrea, Kelly, and Monica, and two boys - Duncan and John. From the clues, determine the order in which each child stood in line (1st through 5th), his or her first and last name, and whether he or she wore a raincoat or carried an umbrella.

1. The last child in line wasn’t the Ratzloff child.

2. Monica, whose surname isn’t Lansaw, was in line ahead of at least one of the two children who carried an umbrella with only one child separating them.

3. John was neither the first child nor the last child in line to board the bus.

4. The Poindexter child (who wore a raincoat) was in line ahead of Kelly, who was ahead of the child surnamed Barnes.

5. The last person in line, whose surname isn’t Barnes, wore a raincoat

6. Duncan wasn’t the first person in line, but he was in line ahead of Ratzloff child.

July's Young People's LP#3 - Mystery Writer

Ina Pitts writes mysteries. However, Ms. Pitts doesn’t write under his own name, but that of four different pseudonyms - A. A. Fields, E.E. Klein, G.G. Katz, and W.W. Merrick. Well, with a name that sounds like ‘in the pitts’ one can understand why! She has written a different number of books under each pseudonym (5, 10, 15, or 20) and her main characters featured in the books written under a particular pen name are amateur detectives. Each of her characters have a different profession - doctor, English professor, newspaper reporter, or security guard. From the clues, determine the number of novels Ina has written under each pen name and the name of the main character she writes about under each pen name, as well as the profession of each person.

1. Ina has written a total of five novels featuring Chuck Cheavers as the main protagonist.

2. Under the pen name A. A. Fields, Ina has written exactly ten more novels than she has the novels which feature the newspaper reporter as the main character.

3. More novels featuring Molly Thatcher as the main character have been written than novels featuring Amy Mallory.

4. It is not a doctor which appears on the pages of the novels written under the pseudonym E. E. Klein.

5. Fewer novels featuring the doctor as the main character can be found on bookshelves around the country than novels featuring the intrepid David Robbins.

6. Chuck Cheavers who appears in some novels is neither a newspaper reporter nor an English Professor.

7. W.W. Merrick is not the pen name under which Ina’s main character is either a doctor or a newspaper reporter.

8. Ina has written 15 or more mystery novels where the main character is a doctor.
