Judy's Logic Problems

November's Young People's LP#1 - Scrambled Appointments

On Sunday, the Millers would be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and their four daughters were coming home for the weekend. As one of their gifts, the girls were taking their Mom to their favorite salon for a complete make-over, and while at it each daughter - Dolly, Holly, Molly, and Polly - each wanted to visit the salon for a special service. One by one the girls called and asked their Mom to make the appointments ahead of time so they could all get in together, and she complied with enthusiasm. Somehow Mrs. Miller got confused on which girl wanted which service. When they all arrived at the salon, it didn’t take long to get things cleared up, however. From the clues, determine the service each daughter wanted done and which service the salon had them in the appointment book for.

1. Three of the four sisters are Molly, the daughter who wanted her hair highlighted, and the daughter who was down in the appointment book for a permanent.

2. Dolly and Polly neither one wanted either a cut and style or manicure.

3. The daughter who wanted her hair cut and styled was down in the salon’s appointment book for a manicure.

4. Dolly wasn’t down in the salon’s appointment book for either a permanent nor a cut and style.

September's Young People's LP#2 - Bag Race

At this year’s Fall Festival one of the activities was a bag race. Several couples signed up and had the option of using plain burlap bags or bringing their own, which they could decorated with any theme they wanted. By chance, the first five place winners were couples who had brought and decorated their own burlap bags. Each couple decorated his and her bag with a different theme - birds, butterflies, Disney characters, flowers, or a Patriotic theme with red, white, and blue stars. From the clues, determine the place each couple took - couples are Adam and Heather, Brett and Kristie, Jeff and Carol, Mike and Darla, and Tom and Sunny - and the theme each couple chose for their theme.

1. Brett and Kristie passed the finish line just after Jeff and Carol, who passed the finish line just after the couple whose bag was decorated with a bird theme.

2. Mike and Darla aren’t the couple whose bag was decorated with a flower theme.

3. The couple with the bag decorated with Disney characters passed the finish line just before the couple whose bag was decorated with flowers, who passed the finish line just before Adam and Heater.

4. Tom and Sunny passed the finish line sometime before the couple whose burlap bag was decorated with butterflies, who passed the finish line just before Mike and Darla.

6. Clara didn’t get the wooden bowl at the house on Ash Avenue.

September's Young People's LP#3 - State Fair Fare

It was the first day of the State Fair and four couples, including Clare and her date and David and his date, planned to make a day of it. After walking the Midway for a while and since it was smell from the eateries was getting overwhelming, each couple decided to go in search of food. They made arrangements to meet back at a pre-determined spot at exactly 11:00 AM, but each couple was a bit late getting back (11:05, 11:10, 11:15, or 11:20 AM). From the clues, determine the time each couple met back after lunch and what each couple had to eat (each couple ate the same type of food, but no two couples ate the same type of food. One couple had chili burgers).

1. Three couples are Georgette and her date, Bruce and his date, and the couple who had hot dogs for lunch.

2. Of the two couples who were late getting to the meeting place as each couple had run into some acquaintances, Emma and her date arrived immediately before Frank and his date, who had run into an old school buddy.

3. The couple who arrived at the meeting spot at 11:10 found Hal and his date already there, but Amber and her date and the couple who had turkey-on-a-stick had not arrived yet.

4. Two couples were late as they had to wait in long lines to get their food. They are Bruce and his date and a couple who arrived shortly after them who had corn on the cob to eat (who arrived immediately after Bruce and his date).
