Judy's Logic Problems

September's Young People's LP#1 - Calamity Jane

Jane is a wonderful person but her friends call her Calamity Jane as it seems that she is forever having little accidents - simply because she doesn’t watch where she is going or what is around her. Last Friday she had a date with a gentleman she’d been hoping would ask her out, and so when she arrived home from work that even to prepare for her date, her mind was on other things and before he arrived to pick her up two hours later, she had four mishap. Each occurred in a different room of her house - bedroom room, dining room, kitchen and living room. She received a minor injury to a different part of her body (chin, elbow, knee, and toe). Thankfully, with clothing and a little make-up, her date was unaware of her bruises and they had a great time! From the clues, determine the room where Jane had each accident and the cause of it, as well as the area on her body which was slightly injured.

1. It was in the bedroom where Jane received an injury while opening her closet door.

2. Jane received on injury by tripping over a chair, but this wasn’t in her kitchen.

3. When Jane hurt her chin, it wasn’t when she tripped over her cat’s bowl.

4. It wasn’t in the living room where Jane received the injury to either her chin or knee.

5. The injury to Jane’s toe occurred in her dining room.

6. Jane injured her elbow on a bookcase while she brushed her hair

September's Young People's LP#2 - Hitting the Rummage Sales

Clara always says that ‘one man’s junk is another man’s treasure’ and to back up her claim, she goes out every Saturday morning to hit some rummage sales. This past Saturday, there were several rummage sales on the north side of town, so Clara made a list of addresses from the newspaper and of she went. Clara made five purchases, each at a different home on a different street in that area. From the clues, determine the amount Clara paid for each item ($1.00, $1.50, $2.00, $3.00, or $4.00), and the item she purchased on the house on each street (one was Cedar Circle).

1. Clara didn’t spend $1.00 on the wooden bowl she bought, which was in perfect condition and would be great for filling with a variety of unshelled nuts over the Christmas holidays.

2. The amount Clara spent at the rummage sale on Lilac Lane was twice as much as that she spent on lovely mosaic trivet.

3. Clara spent $2.00 at the rummage sale on Pine Plaza.

4. The like-new books cost exactly $2 more than the item Clara found among the treasures on Redwood Road.

5. Clara spent exactly twice as much for the picture frames as she did on the desk lamp, which she thought a real bargain at the price the owner had on it.

6. Clara didn’t get the wooden bowl at the house on Ash Avenue.

September's Young People's LP#3 - After School Activities

The Dunmeyers have five daughters, and each had been participating in a different lesson after school. Phyllis and her four sisters had their lessons each on a different day of the week (Monday through Friday). Last week was the last week for lessons for each of the girl as summer vacation arrived, and so to celebrate, when Mrs. Dunmeyer picked up a daughter on each day, they went out and dined at a different place. Mrs. Dunmeyer let each girl chose where they wanted to eat (one daughter selected Subway) and wasn’t surprised that each chose a fast food establishment. From the clues, determine the day of the week each girl had attended her lessons (one was piano lessons) and the eating establishment each offspring selected.

1. The girl who was taking swimming lessons did so on a day immediately before Ginger had her lessons, and the day immediately after the girl who was taking fencing lessons.

2. On three consecutive days, Mrs. Dunmeyer took Tammy out to eat, took the daughter who selected KFC out to eat, and had taken Jocelyn out to eat.

3. One girl, who had just earned her brown belt in karate, took lessons the day immediately before Marla had her lessons, who in turn took lessons the day immediately before the girl who chose Burger King as the place she wanted to eat.

4. The girl who took ballet lessons did so on Monday evening after school.

5. On one day Mother and daughter ate at Taco Bell, and the next day Mother and another daughter ate at the Pizza Hut.
