Judy's Logic Problems

April 2003 ClueJo Logic Problem- Convention Time

The Biltmore Hotel, one of the largest and most accommodating hotels in the city, was host to several conventions during the weekend following Easter. Each of our six intrepid Clue characters - Col. Mustard, Miss Scarlet, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. White, and Prof. Plum, attended one of the six conventions being held at the hotel, and each had a room on a different floor. Each of our ClueJo characters - Dr. Gray, Inspector Black, Lady Melon, Miss Lavender, Mrs. Bluebell, and Sir Sable, also attended one of the six conventions, and each also had a room on a different floor. No two Clue characters and no two ClueJo characters attended the same convention and no two had a room on the same floor (from floor 2, up through floor 7).

The conventions going on that weekend were the Amateur Rock Collectors Convention, the Clue Game Lovers of America Convention, the East Coast Bird Watchers Convention, the Green Thumb Association for Gardeners Convention, the Logic Problem Lovers Association Convention, and the Mystery Book Lovers Convention. Members of each association received his or her invitation in a different colored envelope - ecru, lilac, pale yellow, peach, pink, or powder blue,.

From the clues, can you determine the name of each Clue character and the name of each ClueJo character that has a room on each floor, the convention each attended, and the color of the envelope each I each received his or her invitation in?

1. Each of the two people who had rooms on the same floor attended the same convention.

2. None of the four people who had rooms on the top two floors received their invitations in pink envelopes. Each of the two people who had rooms on the second floor received their invitation in either an ecru envelope or a pale yellow envelope.

3. Of Lady Melon, Miss Lavender, and Sir Sable, each had a room on a floor that was even-numbered or had a room on a floor that was odd-numbered, in some order. Dr. Gray had a room somewhere above Sir Sable’s room.

4. Of Inspector Black, Mrs. Bluebell, and Dr. Gray each attended these three conventions, respectively: the Green Thumb Association of Gardeners Convention, the East Coast Bird Watchers Convention, and the Clue Game Lovers of America Convention.

5. Lady Melon’s room was on a floor somewhere above Mr. Green’s (who was attending the East Coast Bird Watchers Convention) and somewhere below that of the two people who received their invitations in light blue envelopes.

6. The two convention attendees who received their invitations in pale yellow envelopes had rooms on the floor directly below that of Mrs. White.

7. The two people who received their invitations to the Amateur Rock Collectors Convention had rooms on the floor directly above that of Mrs. Peacock.

8. Mrs. Bluebell and Col. Mustard both had rooms on floors that were somewhere between the floor on which Inspector Black had his room and the floor of the two people who received their invitations in pink envelopes, in some order.

9. Miss Lavender, who was not one of the two women who had a room on the fifth floor, had a room on the floor directly above the room held by Prof. Plum.

10. The two people who were at the Biltmore for the Logic Problem Lovers Convention had rooms on an odd-numbered floor, directly above the floor of the two people who received their invitations in peach colored envelopes, and directly below the floor where Dr. Gray and his room.

April 2003 EK Logic Problem - Mr. Green Thumb

Everett’s wife, Sharon, had to tease Everett when she noticed he actually had a green thumb from doing some yard work. This conversation took place on the first of five different days that Everett decided to tackle some of the outside yard work in preparation for warmer days - cleaned pond, fertilized lawn, moved bushes, planted flowers, or pruned trees. On each day, Monday through Friday, Everett tackled a different job. Around noon each day, Everett took a short break and enjoyed a different nice cold drink - cola, beer, Gatorade, iced tea, or lemonade.

It was during his break each day that the mail was delivered, and each day the mail included a different number of orders for a CD of his all of his games (6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 orders). From the clues, determine the day of the week Everett engaged in each gardening chore, the cold refreshment he enjoyed during his break, and the number of orders that arrived in the mail on each day.

1. The day Everett pruned some trees was the day immediately before he enjoyed a nice cold beer (which wasn’t the day that he moved some bushes).

2. On Thursday, Everett received a total of nine orders, each for a CD including all of his games to date. On Monday he received a total of six orders in the mail.

3. On the day that Everett was relaxing with a large glass of delicious iced tea, the mailman delivered either six or seven orders.

4. It was on either Tuesday or Friday that Everett sat drinking a refreshing cola, admiring the work he’d done so far.

5. On the day Everett moved some bushes was either the day he savored the large glass of lemonade (which wasn’t on Thursday) or the day he received a total of eight orders in the mail.

6. Everett enjoyed the glass of iced tea later in the week than the day he planted some flowers, but earlier in the week than the day he cleaned the pond (which wasn’t the day he drank Gatorade).

7. The day Everett fertilized the lawn wasn’t on the day he received seven orders in the mail (which wasn’t on Wednesday).

April 2003 Stefano Logic Problem - Stefano Goes Metal Detecting

It had been sometime since Stefano had gone out metal detecting with his metal detector, so last Saturday he headed out to visit a few places around town after receiving permission to look in these locations earlier in the week. One place he visited was the local golf course which was closed that weekend due to some work being done on the course. He arrived at each location on the hour, each hour, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. At each location he found a different item (one was a Kennedy half dollar) and at each location, he encountered a different type of animal (one was a squirrel which dropped a nut on his head as he dug near a tree!)

From the clues, determine the time he arrived at each location, the item found at each location, and the animal he encountered at each location.

1. At the time Stefano arrived at the playground at Mitchell Elementary to detect, he had not yet been chased around and around by a very large duck who seemed to resent his presence.

2. At 2:00 PM Stefano arrived at the location where, after much digging, he had come across a buffalo head nickel.

3. At one location Stefano encountered a growling, but apparently friendly dog, who seemed to want to help him dig. After leaving there he headed for a baseball diamond located on the town’s north side.

4. Stefano didn’t find the beautiful diamond ring (well, he sure hoped the stones were real diamonds!) at the city park.

5. Stefano was thankful that his sudden encounter with a skunk, which wasn’t at the school playground, didn’t end in a big stink!

6. Neither the encounter with the garter snake nor the encounter with the dog took place at the location where he found a real neat old skeleton key, which he decided to clean up and use as a key ring.

7. When Stefano found the ring, he had already metal detected at the County Fair Grounds but had not yet visited the location where he had encountered the garter snake.

8. The visit to the school playground was immediately after he left the location where he had found the lovely charm bracelet (which wasn’t near the pond at the County Fair Grounds).
