Judy's Logic Problems

August 2000 ClueJo Puzzle - Inspector Black Mysteries

Mr. Boddy, the famous victim of the board game "Clue," has just completed his sixth book in a series featuring Inspector Black. Five devoted fans of the game - Dr. Gray, Lady Melon, Miss Lavender, Mrs. Bluebell, and Sir Sable, also appear within the pages of the books, and, being somewhat conceited, Mr. Boddy himself appears in one or more of his own novels in the guise of Mr. Brown.

Each of the six characters, including Mr. Brown, is introduced into one of the novels when a murder is committed in one of the rooms of his or her home (one murder was committed in the character's library), and then this character appears periodically in one or more novels after that (one of which is "The Secret Room"). From the clues determine the order in which each novel was written and in which each character makes his or her first appearance and the scene of the crime in each book.

1. Three consecutive novels are "The Missing Key," the novel in which Mrs. Bluebell makes her first appearance, and the novel in which a body was found in the Billiard Room.

2. Inspector Black first made the acquaintance of Lady Melon when a body was found in her Conservatory, and Sir Sable first appeared in the fourth novel in the series, while Miss Lavender was first introduced in the novel, "The Clock Winder."

3. Dr. Gray appeared in both "The Midnight Caller" (which was the third book in the series) and "He Cried Wolf," although he was first introduced in an earlier novel.

4. "The Tiger's Cage," in which Inspector Black investigated the murder committed in the Hall, was written some time before the novel in which the body of a man was found in the Study by the maid of the woman who owned the home.

5. Three consecutive novels were "He Cried Wolf," the novel in which a body was found in the Kitchen, and the novel in which Mr. Brown made his first appearance.

August 2000 EK Puzzle- Pet Adoptions

Recently Everett and four other parents adopted a kitten at the local pet shop for their children. Each kitten was either a gray or an orange tabby with either long or short hair, and, of course, was either a male or a female. Along with the kittens, each parent purchased a pet carrier (either ecru or black) and a collar (either blue or red) for their new kitten. From the clues, determine which kitten and accessories each parent purchased. Note: each person adopted exactly one kitten and purchased exactly one collar and one pet carrier.

1. Among the long-haired kittens, exactly two were orange tabbies, exactly two were males, exactly two left the pet shop with red collars, and exactly two left the pet shop in ecru pet carriers.

2. Everett's and Brenda's newly adopted kittens shared only one feature, and that is that both kittens are long-haired. Everett's new kitten, however, shared exactly four features and/or facts with the kitten purchased by Joel.

3. The kittens purchased by Chris (who purchased an ecru pet carrier) and Dan either were both long-haired or were both short-haired. Of the two owners who purchased black pet carriers, only one purchased a blue collar.

4. Exactly one other feature or fact is shared by the only two individuals who purchased short-haired kittens. At least two of the kittens adopted were females.

5. At least two individuals who purchased red collars adopted orange tabbies. The kitten adopted by Dan was a gray tabby for whom he selected a blue collar; any other individuals who adopted a gray tabby selected red collars for their kittens.
