Judy's Logic Problems

August 2001 ClueJo Puzzle - Passing Thru Customs

Not only do the suspects in the game of Clue indulge in knocking off Mr. Boddy every chance they get, but they tend to get into trouble at various other times. For example, last year each suspect - Col. Mustard, Miss Scarlet, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. White, and Prof. Plum, made a trip to a different European country during a different month of the year (April through September). When checking through customs, each suspect 'forgot' to declare a very expensive item he or she had purchased during their trip. From the clues, can you determine which month each suspect travelled abroad, the country he or she visited, and the item each purchased which they didn't declare at customs?

1. The three female suspects are the woman who visited Germany, the woman who failed to declare an antique gold pocket watch, and the woman who travelled abroad during September.

2. Norway was the destination of the suspect who travelled the month immediately preceding the month that Prof. Plum travelled abroad, which was the month immediately preceding the month that the suspect who successfully got a silver letter opener by customs travelled abroad.

3. Mrs. White travelled the month immediately following the month that Miss Scarlet went abroad.

4. The visit to Switzerland occurred later in the year than the visit by the suspect who 'forgot' to declare a rare ivory vase he or she purchased, and earlier in the year than the suspect who 'forgot' to declare a crystal paper weight (which wasn't the suspect who visited Portugal).

5. The three male suspects are Col. Mustard, the man who visited Austria, and the man who managed to get a beautiful black onyx ring through customs without declaring it.

6. The suspect who managed to get an emerald broach through customs without declaring it travelled the month immediately following the month that a female suspect visited France, and sometime earlier in the year than the month that Mrs. Peacock went abroad, which was not to Germany.

MONTH SUSPECT COUNTRY PURCHASES

August 2001 EK Puzzle - White Water Rafting

Last weekend, Everett and his family went white water rafting. The party included Everett, his wife Sharon, his daughter Megan, his son Shane, his sister Donna, and Donna's husband, Jerry. It was quite an experience for them all, as at one time or another, each managed to fall out of the raft. In fact, when Everett fell out, he took another member of the party with him!

Rapids are rated into several classes with Class 4 rapids considered technically challenging with a certain amount of danger and Class 5 rapids considered very challenging and requiring a certain amount of skill. The particular stretch of river they rafted on had three Class 4 rapids - Bunker's Leap, Devil's Gap, and Falcon Fork, and two Class 5 rapids - Echo Falls and Thunder Pass. From the clues, can you determine the order in which they encountered each rapid and the member or members of the family that landed in the drink at each one?

1. The first rapids they encountered and the rapid where Everett and another family member fell into the river were a Class 5 rapids and the one where one of Everett's offspring took a dunking.

2. Falcon Fork was either the first or the third of the rapids encountered, and the sole person who ended up in the river at Falcon Fork was one of Sharon's in-laws.

3. A male member of the family got an icy bath exactly two rapids after Devil's Gap.

4. Bunker's Leap rapids came either exactly two rapids before or exactly two rapids after Everett and another family member ended up in the river.

5. Megan (who fell out of the raft sometime after her Mother) sort of just rolled out of the raft as they encountered one of the Class 5 rapids.

6. Shane fell out sometime after they had navigated Thunder Pass and immediately before they encountered the rapids where Donna got a cold dipping.

7. Somewhere between the two Class 5 rapids on the stretch of river where the party rafted was Devil's Gap rapids and the rapids where Jerry ended up in the river, in that order, but not necessarily consecutively.
