Judy's Logic Problems

Decembers 2000 ClueJo Puzzle - Gift Exchange

This year for Christmas, Lady Melon and five of her closest friends, and the six suspects from the popular board game, Clue (Col. Mustard, Miss Scarlet, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. White, and Prof. Plum) decided to draw names for a gift exchange. Each person bought a different gift and wrapped it metallic paper of one color with a bow of a different color - blue, gold, green, red, silver, white. From the clues, determine the name drawn by each person, the gift he or she gave (one woman gave a beautiful crystal candy dish, and another person gave a book of poetry), and the color of the paper and bow on each gift (no two gifts had the same color combination).

1. Each person drew the name of a person of the opposite gender, and no Clue suspect (one of whom gave a gift wrapped in gold paper with a blue bow) drew the name of another Clue suspect, nor did any two people of the twelve people drawn one another's name.

2. The man who received a pair of cuff links wrapped in red paper had his name drawn by the woman who received a music box decorated with a red bow.

3. Each color of wrapping paper was used by exactly two people, exactly one of whom was a Clue suspect, and each color of bow was used by exactly two people, exactly one of whom was a Clue suspect. No one wrapped a gift with paper and a bow in the color combinations of silver-gold, in any order.

4. The three male Clue suspects are Mr. Green (who drew Mrs. Bluebell's name), Prof. Plum (who drew the name of the person who drew Mr. Green's name), and Col. Mustard (who received the pipe stand wrapped with a white bow).

5. The three female Clue suspects are Mrs. White (who gave a gift to the person who, in turn, gave a gift wrapped in white paper with a blue bow), Mrs. Peacock (who received the gold-plated pen set decorated with a gold bow), and Miss Scarlet (who gave the silver letter opener which was wrapped in blue paper).

6. The other three male participants in the gift exchange were Sir Sable (who gave a gift to the person who, in turn, gave a gift wrapped in silver paper with a white bow), Dr. Grey (who received the desk reference set wrapped in gold paper), and Inspector Black (who gave the bronze book ends decorated with a silver bow).

7. The other three female participants in the gift exchange were Lady Melon (who drew Prof. Plum's name), Mrs. Bluebell (who drew the name of the person who drew Lady Melon's name), and Miss Lavender (who received the charm bracelet wrapped in green paper).

8. These five people - Miss Scarlet, Mr. Green, Mrs. Bluebell, Mrs. Peacock, and Mrs. White, did not give nor receive a gift whose wrapping or bow is a color that is associated with his or her name.

9. The man who gave the personalized stationary (who is not the man who received the wooden hand-carved picture frame) decorated his gift with a gold bow.

Everett and four other residents on Holiday Lane decorated the outside of their homes for Christmas this year.
